lots of tranny problems....really need insight

Ok so: I'm having loads of problems with my tranny in my 97 sport 4.0L with the AX-15. Heres a list of what's going on:

1. Sometimes it just won't go into gear. I do the whole into neutral clutch out and count to three and it still wont synchronize/go into gear. The lever just stops and gets impossible to move. Very rarely I have to shut the jeep off to get it to go into gear.

2. There is terrible shuddering and rattling when I take off from a stop in first gear. Its ridiculous because if your on any type of hill it shudders/clatters VERY violently. My guess is that the tranny mount is shot and possibly something with the flywheel. I suspect the tranny mount because even when just cruising and not shifting when I go over a bump there is a loud rattling/ clunking noise from underneath.

Any insight/suggestions on what to fix/do would be great because these problems really are taking some of the fun out of driving the Jeep which is why i have one

thanks

first examine the mount, and replace it. If the fluid hasn't been changed, change it. look for large chunks when you do this.

Watch out for adam's apples and large hands.

Same problem with my ax-15. I don't wait after the neutral release. I push it before the gears come to a complete stop. Or I'll swing it down into second then back to first.

Put your hand on the tunnel by your right knee. If you feel the knocking there, it may be the T-case shift linkage bracket. Was never recalled, but Jeep acknowledged that there is a problem with its design and issued a TSB. If under warranty, they'll fix for free, but otherwise it's about 20 bucks for the parts ad the dealer.

Jeep TJ Transfer Case Shifter Knocking TSB

Installed it and my knocking went away. I didn't get the knock until my 1" BL, but some jeeps get it with no lift. Good luck.

Sure it is not your clutch slipping? Notice any burning smell?

I haven't noticed any burning smell. The clutch was just replaced a couple of years ago and I know the flywheel was machined a bit. I know that many say not to machine jeep flywheels but I don't think a flywheel by itself would cause extreme rattling probs etc.

I had similar problems, I had real trouble getting second, sometimes crunched and sometimes I really had to hold pressure on the stick for a few seconds to get the gear, also had a banging as I accelerated uphill. I changed my transmission fluid and replaced the transmission mount that was totally separated and all is now perfect.
