Loud banging sound under deceleration?

My TJ sport in making a loud banging sound under deceleration. Adding very slight throttle, makes the noise stop. Anyone have any ideas? I also posted this in the regional forums looking for a good mechanic in my area. Thanks.

The noise is continuous as long as you dont touch the throttle. Sorry I wont be able to record it. I'm wondering if it is some kind of detonation or slight backfire. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with what pinging sounds like in this car, as it is my girlfriend's.

Wow that's a mysterious symptom. I wonder if her TJ's exhaust header could be cracked which is very common in '97, '98, and earlier '99 models before the header was redesigned. If it is cracked, that can cause backfiring, detonation, etc.

Ya but a back fire detonation or ping are pretty easy to tell what they are. Where does the sound come from?

An exhaust leak is one of the first things I thought of. It seems like the engine is quite a bit louder now too. Is the header an expensive part to replace? I would guess that part would would not be too expensive used? Sorry about all the questions. I'm new to jeeps. If it has to be replaced, do you recommend replacement with the redesigned part?

Its coming from the engine compartment around the bellhousing if I had to guess. Certainly not from the back of the car.

I'm going to check to see if I can see any obvious cracks in the header. Thanks for the help so far!

Sorry, this is the first time I've been able to look at the thing in the day. The header is disconnected from the downpipe. It looks like one of the bolts came completely off! I'm gonna take it to an exhaust shop and have it put back on. Thanks for all the help guys! By the way I think I'm completely hooked on this Jeep thing.
