I have been hearing a rattling noise coming from the undercarriage of my 2005 Wrangler Sport for a few weeks now. I thought, after reading some of the other posts here, that I might be experiencing the heat shield rattle that many have had, but I'm not sure now.
I was recently in a drive through and I took it out of gear so I wouldn't have to keep holding the clutch, but I noticed that when I applied the clutch, the rattle stopped. Granted, when it sits and idles the rattle is faint at best, but I did notice that it stopped completely when the clutch is pushed in.
Usually the rattle is loudest when I am in first gear, getting ready to shift to second, or when I am coming to a stop. When I get past second gear the rattle goes away.
As I said, the rattle is only faint when sitting still and much louder when I am in a low gear and moving slowly.
I plan to crawl up under it this weekend to check out the heat shield, but is there something else I should look for? I am no professional mechanic, but I'm not afraid to try to fix something myself as long as I know I have the necessary tools on hand.
By the way, just for information, my TJ has 4.0 6-Cyl. with a six-speed manual tranny. No lifts or suspension mods. Yet.:thumb:
