Loud Squeal upon start up

Temp outside is in the teens and twenty's here in NJ. Drove to PA and back yesterday no problems. Started my truck, 06 wrangler with 22,500 miles and a loud loud squeal was persistent. Looked like a pulley was not spinning and I shut it off. Turned it back on still squealing badly. Pulley was spinning. Started revving it up and squeal started to stop and come back intermittently. Sounded like it was coming from the middle of the motor or alternator. Started driving to get it home and all sounds stopped quickly. Anyone have any similar problems. It was very loud.

BTW, the truck was sitting for like 12 hours in the cold but it has been colder lately and sitting for longer. Maybe something was just sticking?

I have a 1997 sport and have had that happen in cold weather many times. It would even happen VERY briefly in warmer weather just as a little squeek right after start up. I had a mechanic that I know lubricate the main belt and it solved the problem. Even if you get it lubricated it may or may not continue.
If you know a mechanic personally, they can show you how to apply the lubricant to the belt yourself, its a very easy thing to do in your driveway(just be careful of the spinning belt close to your fingers/hand.)

hope this helped

It did not sound like belt squeal. It sounded like a bearing or something was frozen in the motor. Needed to get lubricated or something. It never ever did that before. I just bought it at 18,900 miles changed to mobil 1 synthetic oil at 19,000 miles. I change the oil every 5000 with mobil 1. It was down 1 qt also. Maybe have to let it get cold and check it again.

I'm a newbe here but it could be a shaft squealing on the pulley you said was not spinning (or water pump etc.). You said it did not sound like a belt squeal, but I've had belt squeals that I thought would burst my eardrum LOL.

Hello from NJ/PA

Anyway, welcome to club here. There's a few things in order to check.

First, try lubricating the belt. Belt cleaner is about $8 at your local auto shop. Just turn on the car, and spray it right onto the belt moderately. No need to overdo it.

After that, look at the motor while someone else starts it. Identify where the squeak is coming from and then compare it to your belt routing diagram (search google). The two biggest things it will be is your a/c condenser and the alternator. The easiest thing is to shut off the A/C and restart the car. Does it make that sound again? If not, the clutch has gone bad in the a/c condensor. Replace it with a NEW one or have it professionally done. If it's the alternator, you'll hear a metal grinding noise. Swapping the alt is simple enough.
