Low Oil Pressure 2000 Jeep Wrangler

I have a 6 cylinder with a 125,000 miles on it and replaced the oil pump once and the oil pressure is still low. I dont know if I should have a another oil pump put in or what to do. I registers 40 lbs when cold, 20 lbs when warmed up and running down the road at 2000 rpm. But when I am sitting at a redlight or stopped the pressure drops almost to Zero. The engine sounds good with no knocks and starts and runs very well.
I may try some 15w oil and add an additive like Lucas to see if that may boost the pressure a little.

Don't trust your electric gage or the sending unit. try a mechanical gage to compare it with and if it is actually low i would suspect internal pressure leak most likely cause is the bearings.

Odds are you simply have a bad oil pressure sender which is infamous for going bad in the TJ. It wasn't long after I bought my then-new '97 TJ that it started doing the same thing, replacing the oil pressure sender corrected the gauge problem. 15W is way too heavy of a viscosity to run, especially in upstate NY where it is cold right now. Swap the oil pressure sender and stick with a 5W-30 or 10W-30, I'd go no heavier than that... especially during the winter.

I have a '99 with 130K and same oil pressure issue. When accelerating, typically over 40lbs, when stopping or coasting, drops to 20ish. Sometimes lower...

Some oil seepage from pan, but not to where it drips at all, so the seal is good?

Any other thoughts besides the oil pressure sender?

97 with 125k, exsactly the same...40 cold, 20ish warm idle, have seen it as low as 10....after reading many posts..I plan on putting in a new gauge set up. I don't think its correct.

between 20 to 40 is normal, as long as it doesnt drop to 0.
oil pressure depends on the thickness of the engine oil, if you use a thiner oil the pressure would be lower.

I have dealt with the same problem

I had the same problem but mine turned out to be the camshaft bearings and it was cheaper to change the whole engine out. I have seen lots of theses same problems in the 4.0. Mine drops to zero and then the lifters would collapse and start missing. Cost me about $1800 dollars and I just bought the Jeep so I think the previous owner knew it was bad.

So how do I tell if its the camshaft bearings, an oil send or oil thickness? Oil is clean...just bought it a month ago. No ticking or lifter sounds. No knocks. Runs strong.

Pressure has dropped down to under 10 according to my son, who drives it most. Don't want him getting stuck out somehwere...so, best approach?

Mine is a 2000 tj 4.0 auto, 152000 miles, I have changed the oil sending unit twice within a week. one was aftermarket and the second one was oem. Oil pressure still very low, at warm idle it drops to @5 psi and then drops to zero and check gauge light comes on! So sending unit did not fix mine. Engine is quite and runs good! But I guess it's internal like cam bearings, if anyone knows something else to try I would certainly appreciate it.

Oil pressure issue and warning light comes on

OK, my '99 TJ is doing the same: runs great, 40+lbs at 40-50 mph, drops to less than 5, engine light comes on. Accelerate and pressure goes back up to normal.

Next steps:
- heavier oil
- Lucas treatment
- change sender

Anything else to check during this stage?

so if it is dropping to 0 and the engine light comes on, your take? Runs strong, quiet. No leakage. Not a seal or anything?

I changed out the sending unit, changed the oil to 10W-40, Then to 20W50. Still no oil pressure. It never knocks but when the lifters collapse it will start to missfire and the CEL comes on. I called the guy I bought it from and he wanted me to call his "mechanic" I did so and he said "oh yeah, That was happening to his daughter" So the guy knew it was bad. I just changed the engine with a used one. The price was anywhere from $110o to $2000 for a new one plus $600 to change it out.

I sure hope you got some money back from the previous owner that in my book was an a$$.

you could get an inexpensive " engine oil presure test gauge
your engine RPM should be 1600
and the oil pressure should read 37 psi.

that is what my mechanic told me.

can anyone confirm that info ?

He only gave me $400 back

There's a term concerning used cars. I think it's "caviat emptor" It means buyer beware. There's not much you can do about a used car from an individual. I buy 3 or 4 cars a year and I still want to trust people so I learned a good lesson from this guy. The bad thing about it, he was a Baptist preacher. You live and learn.
Back to the subject. Mine never clicked or knocked. Above 1000 Rpm's it had enough oil pressure to keep it lubed. Just when you stopped and let it idle for maybe 30 seconds or so it would drop to zero.
Hope you don't have to spend the money I did.
I almost tried putting bearings in the lower end and see if that would raise the pressure enough but I didn't. Worth a try

Angry 2000 Jeep Wrangler Low Oil Pressure

This is a follow up to my original post of low oil pressure. I changed the oil to 15w and added the Lucas Additive. I then drove it less then 30 miles and there was a loud noise and the engine quit and would not restart. The engine turns over but there is no compression. I removed the oil cap and could see the rocker arms working and apparently it jumped timing when something broke.
The mechanic says the best fix is to replace the engine because of the low oil pressure and possibly bad bearings issue in this engine.
Plus it had a new oil pump installed by the previous owner who had traded it in to a Used car dealer of whom I bought it from. Again buyer beware, I wished I had of contacted the previous owner before I bought it but I didnt.
I have checked prices on rebuilt engines and the best price I have found so far is about $1800 + $500 for installing it. I have already spent $600 on repairs.
I guess I will have to bite the bullet and install a rebuilt engine. Any ideas?

I bought a used one with 78K on it from Advance.

Thew price was $1100 and about $500 to install it. The reason the used price is double of what a used engine is that they all have problems. I going to get mine fixed and sell it before anything else happens to it.
Advance can help you with finding one. They are great people.

Help please!

Alright so I have a 2000 Wrangler Sport 4.0. I replaced the oil pump and pick up screen due to low oil pressure. Now I'm having trouble putting my oil pan back on, any advice? It's almost like its bottoming out but its the factory replacement everything it the same size and length......any help is appreciated.

WHY NOT just sell it as is, and let the NEW OWNER deal with the issue, rather than DUMPING YOUR MONEY into something that someone else might be looking for to do a V-8 install ? THEN YOU wouldn't have to worry about giving
a disclosure on all the issues you've had in the past. Just that your're selling a Jeep with a Blown Motor. (you did have all intentions of informing the possible new buyer the Jeeps been a LEMON for you ------ right? of course you did.)
