Main seal Leak?

I found your site during a search. Looks Professional and after reading a few post so are the members so I am going to hang out for a while.

I will introduce myself in another thread but now I have a question that is pressing time.

I have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sahara 4.0 and the MAin seal is leaking. The Mechanic says he will put an additive in the oil and that should take care of it. Sounds like Snake oil to me. What happens at the next oil change. anyone tried this and had luck is is it temporary. The Jeep has 74k on it.

Thanks

Replace the seal, the additive is some kind of bandaid, In fact I would consider changing the oil to full synthetic, I've seen that stop leaks by making the seal more pliable vs the way they harden with normal oil.
As for changing it, 4 hours in the driveway on your back, drop pan, loosen crankshaft mains, pull old seal out, install new seal, retorque the mains, etc.
If you do it drop the oil pan the nite before and let it drip overnite, less in your face that way.

good advice from richp, also make sure its the main. people get fooled by valve cover leaking down the back of engine, oil pan leaking, and even oil filter housing leaks straight back, then down looking like the main.

The Snake Oil is in and he's going to drive it. If it doesn't fix it will get done right. I can't imagine that It's going to hang in there very long.

Thanks for the replies.

To find out where it's coming from you normally steam clean the engine then find the highest spot where there is oil, then look on that plane. Oil does not leak up.
Also the valve cover does a better impersonation of a rear main seal leak than the rear main seal does, just reach around with a rag or paper towel and blot it.
I've also had oil filter O rings stick to the old mount and you end up with TWO O rings on there. I have also seen it seep out from the headgasket.
