Manual Locking hub nightmare... HELP

i picked up a mudder and the previous owner dropped in a dana 44 from a 1978 or 79 ford bronco, at one point he had an issue with a locking hub burning out on the passenger side, so he replaced the hub assemby, now there is no locking hub, so i picked up the right set for the axle, put the driver's side in no problem, then when i tried to put the right side in, the locking hub cap itself sticks out about a quarter inch!, my mechanic and i have tried many different hub locks with no luck, does anyone know what could be wrong with this thing?

thanks!!!!

post some pic's that might help. Does/did the passenger side have just a drive flange? (spelling?)

Most likely wrong, but with the drive flange it might need a new/different spindle to accept the hub correctly.
