Misfire......Cyl 1

I have an 01 Wrangler auto trans. I've had a ton of trouble lately. The main problem is misfire in cylinder 1, well that's what the code reader says. I tried coil packs and plugs, no help. In the mean time, the clock spring went out, giving me readings of bad TPS. While this problem persisted, the old problem magically went away. Well, I got that fixed and the old problem came back. It seams to run ok normally, but if I am coasting slowly down hill or in traffic, the check engine light flashes and it will go to shit, running very rough, with no acceleration. If I pop it into neutral, and restart it, it goes back to normal. Also, If I disconnect the battery, it won't do this for about a day. I'm confused, this forum helped with the clock spring thing, that I thought was just a bad TPS, so hopefully you guys can shine a little light on this crap.

I had the exact problem...98 auto 4.0...after replacing everything and not fixing the problem.my mechanic told me to drive the piss out of it....I drove it about 100 miles a day averaging about 70 mph.the check engine light turned off...my valve seats are worn out and they are sticking.so hopefully can buy a performance cylinder head in the near future.my light still turns on here and there but still does great.hope this helps...

I had this same problem after changing spark plugs it all started. I pulled them back and all the gaps were good. I see you have replaced the coil pack which i had to do too. I also had to replace the camshaft and crankshaft position sensor, after all that it finally went away. When I was doing my research I also saw a guy that said he had to replace his clock spring but i see you did that too. Also what Kind of plugs are you running? Most guys I know say run autolite or champion most say champion.

Also I put copper plugs in, I don't think the Tjs like any platinum plugs

It does seem to like being reamed. I've been using Lucus Fuel treatment and reaming it a little.

Did you have check engine light on? Was it reading misfire? I took it to a jeep dealer, they said they fixed it and it was a "bad wire" and charged me 340$
I think they did nothing, it is not fixed. I'm going to call the Monday morning and raise hell. I'm thinking of trying the sensors myself and trying to get at least some of my money back from the dealer.

I have been driving the piss out of it, and I also Seafoam d it. I hate this thing.

Yes my engine light came on everytime I had the problem. Mine read misfire But I don't have spark plug wires so it read bad coil pack so I replace my coilpack or the full rail assembly really. Cost 100$ for one from advanced auto. But after I did that it's run like a dream. Drove to the mountains of north Carolina this weekend from south Carolina and back with the top down. It ran smooth as can be.

I allready changed coilpack. I have a ticking and it might be coming from the camshaft position sensor. It's the only place I can feel the tick. I'm going to try that next. I have read that it can cause misfire.

That's crazy, I was just about to start a thread for the same thing. I changed my plugs yesterday on my 02 X (was running fine before I started) Now I have a misfire in my #4. No friggin idea what to do.

im working on a 2000 jeep tj. it coded up po314 and po340 wich is misfire on 3 cylinder and also camshaft sensor. i replaced the camshaft sensor, very easy and the spark plugs using champion very easy. know it runs rough like there is a fowled plug i think it is the coil rail. any ideas. rentacop.

i also took plugs back out and checked gap and to see if plugs were wet everything aok. on my 2000 jeep cherokee it was a mess and it turned to be the ingnition relay and computer were toast. i am finding out that the 98 to 2001 jeep xjs and tj s are not a very good choise for a vehicle.

i have a 2000 that did this after getting a head job done. changed plugs, injector, and coil rail when the mis started happening.. dealer later figure out that it was a lose cam sensor that was out of wack.. reset it and set the timing and it runs like a champ

My 97 TJ shows misfire cyl 1. New plugs, wires, dis cap and rotor button. Check engine light still on. My problem is below normal compression in cyl 1. I also changed fuel injectors. Even though check eng light on, it still runs like a dream.

I had a miss on cylinder 1 on my 97 4.0 but I'm thinking it was carbon on a valve cause out clinked one day and miss has been gone for 10k miles. Try seafoam in a vacuum line
