I’ve had to replace my throwout bearing 3 times in the last year and they’ve all started to do the same rattling, grinding noise I’ve heard from previous bearings. I don’t know why I’m having to replace it so often and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced a problem like this. Is it something I’m doing or is there something else thats causing my bearings to break. Any little bit of help that could potentially lead up to me fixing this problem for good would be greatly appreciated
The next time you replace it, remove the pressure plate and reinstall it with an alignment tool to make sure it's properly centered. Another thing to make sure of is that the dowels are present on the block to align the bell housing. You didn't mention anything about rough engagement or a chattery clutch, but something must not be aligned properly for this to keep reoccurring and what I picture happening is the bearing is riding on the pressure plate with a slight uneven load on it from being misaligned...... and eventually failing. Just a thought.
A screeching that happens only when the clutch pedal is up and goes away when you step down on the clutch is not caused by the throwout bearing. The throwout bearing only spins when you step down on the clutch pedal, which is when it lifts the spinning clutch disk off of the spinning flywheel.
Hard to say... perhaps a bad pilot shaft bearing, bad input shaft bearing, or maybe the installer of the clutch and throwout bearing wasn't using a pilot shaft to center things up before tightening the pressure plate bolts.
Kinda sounds like your not able to fully disengage the clutch. Check the clutch fork and pivot ball as well while you're in there. If the fork is bent/broken or the ball is too worn/broken maybe the TOB is riding on the fingers when disengaged and not traveling far enough to push it in all the way.
Does the pedal feel different than it should when you push it?
I had replaced both the master & slave cylinders when I installed the new clutch kit about 8 months ago. Should I have to replace them again this soon?
I think I found the problem. The bearing retainer had a groove carved into it from rubbing on the clutch plate i assume. I’m replacing almost everything in the bell housing just to be on the safe side though
I have a 99 TJ sahara with an ax15, I have done 8 TOBs this year, I've replaced the clutch and alighned it, replaced a broken input shaft bearing retainer and I'm still having problems. every time I pull out the bearing one side where the metal wires are is broken off what could cause this?
Looks like a lot of rust on a bearing that's only a few months old. Do you spend a lot of time in deep water? I would check the release arm for excessive wear or a bend, make sure the bearing is installed correctly, make sure the pressure plate is in good shape (I would probably just install a complete LUK clutch kit), make sure release arm pivot ball is tight and lubed, and that the return spring is in good shape and in place, and make sure the transmission input shaft bearing retainer's slide surface is in good shape and lubed. Also, do not use discount auto parts throw out bearings....use LUK's.
