Mysterious coolant leak

I'm losing coolant pretty regularly. It's from somewhere in the engine bay (as opposed to in the block) since I can always find leaked coolant everywhere from on top of the radiator to the steering stabilizer. I actually thought it was maybe coming from the lower rad hose or water pump, but can't find it for sure. Had it pressure tested today and it holds pressure and the leak couldn't be found with the motor running or off. Any ideas?

I have before, but not lately. If that was the problem, would it show up while doing the pressure test?

Well you could use something like talcum powder on certain areas and see if you get water running in the powder to narrow down the search.

What year jeep. Is it the stock radiator? The plastic stock ones usually go out around the 60K mark. Maybe the pressure test didn't detect something. You said you noticed it starting at the top, thats where they fail, where the plastic meets the metal. First thing to eliminate as a cause would be the cap, then snug up all hose clamps, and like ratuna said check overflow.

Yeah, I know the rads are notorious for failing so I replaced it last summer. Didn't fix the problem. Jeep's a 98 4.0

That's what I thought, that or the lower rad hose, but no loss on the pressure test.

If its a slow weep, you likely won't see it on a pressure test.

Best bet it to clean everything. then let it run for awhile watching everywhere you suspect....

or get some Bars stop leak, and move on until it gets worse

Don' they sell some UV dye you can put in the water and then use a UV light to find it? or is that just for A/C's? I can't remember.

I know it sounds wierd but I notice the other day anti-freeze coming out of my Firewall, I just figured it was coming from my Heater, doesn't the anti-freeze go thru the heating element? something to check.

Lightbulb Leaking out of firewall

I had a similar problem on my 95. there should be an overflow/pressure relief on the left side of your firewall looking at your engine it sounds like this is were it is coming from when mine was over pressuring it would hit the hoses and spray all around and just cover my engine with coolant i thought my jeep was falling apart. I never really figured out the exact cause of it but soon after i replaced my heater core which was plugged with crap over the years and it stopped spraying. It sounds like this might be your problem the hose is about a foot long about a quarter inch in diameter and has a weird end to it. it executes with sort of a nickel shaped disk. because that pressure tests your main system and not your heating components because its not up to temp thats probably why it wan't showing up on any pressure tests. It just sounds alot like what happened to me im not saying replace Ur heater core "because it just not fun" but maybe do a full system clean and let it get up to temp. hope this helps you locate ur problem.
