I am at my wit's end, and about to rip the heap apart. I have a rattle at lower speeds (5-8 MPH) that sounds like a heat shield clattering against the hood (will wake up neighbors). The sound seems to travel from side to side. Sometimes it is louder on the right, sometimes on the left, but it always seems to come from under the hood. I have squirreled around under the Mule in an attempt at tracking it down. Checked all the bolts, ran rubber tubing along AC Lines, and even re-tacked a broken weld on the heat shield by the motor mounts.
If anyone has had this and lived please tell me the secret.
I had a cat do that too. The brick on the inside broke apart into two or three pieces. Rattled evrytime i slowed down to a crawl. Finally got feed up and cut the sucker out, i put a test pipe in its place. Best thing i did.
I think mine is starting to go bad too...just a couple rattles between shifting gears at low speed. I'm glad it's something that is starting out subtle at first...makes it easier to break it to the wife that I need to spend some money!!
At some point during jeep ownership, you will BUST A NUT!!!
After months of going through every Inch Of the Mule, I have fixed the rattle. I am extremely angry about it because I could have repaired it months ago if I had actually started at the beginning instead of jumping to conclusions. It was the center caps on the wheels. This should be a lesson to all. Never jump to conclusions on a Jeep, it will make you look like a fool, and make you crazy at the same time.
i love how after all the work that you did it came down to the caps. i had the same thing happen to me with my old camaro. literally tore the whole car down to the frame and still couldnt find it till i kicked the wheel and there the noise was so i feel your pain. i took it as a lesson learned the hard way and now i allways start with the simple free stuff and work my way up to the hard expensive stuff. live and learn
