Need a creative solution

Luckily I picked a 97 as my jeep and it seemes they were still working bugs out of the TJ.

My HVAC blower resistor goes out once every 6 months. It's a bad design. Is their a way to use a 03-06 blower resistor on the 97 tj?

I have no idea but do you turn the blower off before shutting the jeep off. If not the surge on start up may be what is causing the early failure. I always turn everything off, radio, fan, etc, before shutting down and only had to replace the resistor once in 9 years.

Taught my four kids to do the same like always wearing the seat belt.

Good idea. Anyone know if I can upgrade my resistor?

x2. I have always done it that way. I turn everything off before I shut down. I don't like my compressor trying to engage when I start my engine. It puts a power strain on the system.
Nor, do I like the blower, or any accessory, taking power from the starter.
It is probably why my batteries last so long. I have had my current battery for at least seven years.
Power surges are not a good thing. Especially to an expensive aftermarket radio.

I have never had to replace a resistor or my blower in 16 years.
And, I have a 1997 Wrangler TJ too. (*crosses fingers*)

If the resister keeps failing, the fan motor is probably going bad.

+1 - when the motor goes bad it can draw too much power killing the resistor

The high amp load from a dying blower motor also has a tendency to melt the resistor plug. Check the wires on the fan speed selector a well. The TJ fan doesn't seem to get the death howl like other vehicles I've owned, it just destroys related parts.

Also, make sure you're not buying a crap part.. Something like that better or OEM will go a long way

Most blower resistor failures are a result of hi amp draw thru the blower, check your grounds and connections do a terminal drag test if they all look good do a amp draw test on the blower itself.
The 03 and newer blower resistor can be made to fit in the earlier case with a little trimming and a new style connector....however they have the same issues as the earlier resistor.

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm having an issue with the blower as well. The blower only works on high for my '99. Anyone seen this before?

Replaced it, and it's still going bad

It seemed the 03-06 blower resistor is sealed, I think this is my issue. Stuff gets on the open blower resistor.

What brand motor did you use as the replacement? I have a 98 without the sealed resistor as well and have no issues, since I replaced it last winter. Is it possible your cowl drain is leaking inside and shorting it out maybe?

Anyone know if I can rig a 03-06 blower resistor on my 97?

Anything can be done, but as I stated earlier I run the stock one with no issues, as do many, many other people! There just is no need to do it.

If there was no need then why did they change it?

Why did they change a lot of things through the years?

I say there is no need as many of us run the stock early model resistor with ZERO issues.

GingerTJ, I know you have your heart set on doing this. I'll be honest, never heard of it, and did a quick search here and a few other places and nothing popped up...

Your problem in blaming something for a poor design, is that you maybe looking at a symptom rather then the cause. I like a lot have the original resistor in our 97.

From your posts I read of maybe a water leak, and a build up of stuff, I think you said on the resistor.

Why not fix the cause(s) instead of the symptom. Both water and build up (what ever that is) are things that shouldn't happen inside the case.

Even if you figure out the newer resistor, that water and build up are going to continue. What's going to fail next? What are you going to blame then for the problems?

Find the cause not the symptom, and fix it, and your resistor problem will go away.
