Need a distributer expert.

Ok, got the new engine in on my 97 tj 2.5 and my buddy put the distributer on when we got the engine to top dead center. The jeep started but would bog down on excelleration. We figured it was the distributer, so we took it out and tried the instructions in the unclear book. The hayes book I have says on 95 wranglers to turn the oil pump to the ten o clock position, then take the distributer and start it at the one o clock position, when you slide it down it will rotate clockwise just past the three o clock position where it locks to the block. It says it will be at the number 1 at the cap. When I do that it looks like it is in between the 1 and 2 and wont start what so ever. The stupid book doesnt say anything about 97 or above. I need help asap, anyone know where I can get better install instructions or have a sugestion.
