Exclamation Need help!! Out of town.

I'm out of town working in Tallahhassee Fl. My jeeps been acting funny cuttin out and bucking for little while. Figured it was a sensor. Yesterday it finally threw codes 12,37,and 11. I know the first two arent that important. So I disco'd the battery cable when I got to work and hooked it back up when I left. CEL off. Ran fine for a couple miles in town then started bucking and felt like the trans was slipping. Pull into a autozone. Go to back up and grinding noise fom under the jeep. Then it shuts off. Cranks right back up. Put it in reverse and it shuts off. Crank it, put it in reverse and rev it a little and make it into a parking space. Check trans fluid. Fine. Go in and buy a crank position sensor. Come out and lay under it to change and theres a small puddle of trans fluid. Coming out from around the bell housing. Never leaks anywere. I install the sensor re connect the battery and crank it up. Runs great. No sputtering or anything. Go down the road for about 2 miles and it doesn't want to shift into high. Then starts slipping. Then nothing in the trans. Just revs up in all positions. Pull over. I turn it off. Then crank it. Goes in gear for a few feet then revs again. Coast into hotel parking lot. Whinning noise coming from around the bell housing. What do you think it is? Torque converter? Trans? Help please!!!! 97 4.0 AUTO.

Ok gave it and me a chance to cool off. Cranked it up put it in gear and drove around the parking lot. Same thing, whinning noise, slipping then nothing. Put it in each gear, in drive, 2nd and 1st nothing, but when I put it in reverse the rpms go up and the motor idles ruff and the whinning gets worse then it will kinda go in gear. Anybody?

Sounds a lot like what happen to mine the last week before I had to get my trans rebuilt. It gradually got worse then I drew the last straw when I tried to turn across a couple lanes of traffic and got nothing from the Jeep except whining noises. Good luck though cuz if it is your trans they ain't cheap.

Have ya checked the transmission fluid? Is it at the right level? Thatís the only thing I can think of that would make it slip. Just saying.

How much for a new tranny? The fluid looked good. The bell housing gets hot real quick and the fluid smells burnt. And thanks guys.

Hey I read an article once where this guy was losing his breaks. When we checked his reservoir was fine no visible leaks nothing. Come to find out the break lines were against the exhaust and was causing the fluid to boil and turn in to a vapor, hydraulics donít work on vapor, then when it cooled it showed fine. Just guessing, maybe something like that is going on here. Might be worth a look.

id add some transmission fluid additive to it when you get it back. be sure not to over fill but, your tranny got pretty hot im presuming and that can cause a lot more damage than is visible. adding some protectant to it will help your tranny last longer over all. I use some in my 75 dj-5 and its got almost 300000 miles on the original transmission.

Labor is expensive and it's not that it's hard but it's time consuming. And the parts ain't cheap either. Remember Jeep = Just Empty Every Pocket

agreed, I worked at a shop a few years ago while in school, we charged $75 an hour for labor, and we were the cheapest in the area by a lot. most dealerships were twice that or more. then throw in a new torque converter and your looking at an easy $1000.

if I were you id do whatever I can to get, and keep your transmission cool. 9 times out of 10 they break because they got too hot for too long, an additive in the fluid will help but as mentioned an additional cooler for the transmission will do you loads of good.
