Need info on great deal for a replacement engine!

Hey guys,

Well I've been hunting for a good deal on a replacement 2.5 for my tired '97's engine (157,xxx miles) and I found one on Craigslist for an AWESOME price. The only problem is, is that it came from a '93 YJ but only has 83,xxx miles on it.

Does anyone have any input on how difficult the swap is into a TJ? From the pictures, the intake, exhaust and everything else looks the same, but I'm sure there are some differences on the wiring for the coolant temp sensors, oil pressure sending unit and other sensors.

Anyone have any input? Any help is appreciated as I kinda have to know fairly quickly so this deal doesn't pass me up if I can use it!

Thanks fellow Jeepers!!!

BTW - I've been lurking for awhile and I appreciate all the knowledge I've obtained from this site!

I'd definitely agree with you Giancarlo, but when the PO didn't keep up with regular maintenance very well, it takes it's toll. I had to replace the head gasket 3 days after I bought it and it has very low oil pressure and the rod bearings are telling me they don't feel like working too much longer.

I've tossed around the idea of replacing the main/rod bearings and oil pump for a budget rebuild to get a little more life out of it, but with the deal I'm getting on this engine, it would actually be cheaper to replace it, hence why I'm hoping this swap will be fairly painless if it will work.

It's also my DD and I can't afford it to be down very long.

I have to agree completely though, with the hell this engine has obviously been through, it's amazing it's not dead yet and is a testament to the durability of the 2.5.

Anyone else have any input?

only thing i would be concerned about is that the yj motor will be obd1 whereas your tj is obd2. the yj motor will not have all the sensors that your tj motor does.

Thanks for the help 350. After some more research, looks as though I will have to reuse my OBDII intake manifold to retain the sensors for the Throttle body and other sensors in it. As far as the block I think all I'll have to transfer is the coolant temp and oil pressure sending unit; I think those are the only two that are in the block.

For the price I'm getting it for, I can't pass it up!
