I think your idea of converting would be tough...HOWEVER, just get a non-fully restored FJ and do the rest yourself...you should go to an FJ forum and start chatting there to get some ideas. Sell your jeep first to make sure you have the money.

I bet if you asked the forum members here, they all would be willing to pitch in $5 each to help us, I mean, help you out.

Thats a generous offer. I think it would be cool to restore a vehicle, but I don't have the resources or the knowledge. Like how would you deal with rust and all of that?

I have a friend with a built FJ with a SBC in it. It's very nice, but he just bought a perfectly stock LJ to tow behind his motorhome for the easy wheeling camping trips. I sold him all my towbar stuff I don't need anymore.

I am curious to see this myself. But a question needs to be asked here that I haven't seen yet.

What parts do you want to keep from each vehicle? Are you just wanting the FJ body, bolted onto a jeep frame (I'm guessing TJ)? Or are we talking mixing parts like drivetrain and suspension and such?

If all you want from the FJ is the body, then your biggest problem is wiring and coming up with some mounts. Some of your wiring problems might be bypassed by using wrangler components, like tailights and such. This would require more mechanical fabrication but it would work right, and might even be kinda fun. You may also have to ditch some features the FJ may have until l you can figure out how to wire it right.

I have seen people put H1 Hummer taillights on TJ's, why not TJ lights on an FJ? Of course I say this without seeing either of them side by side, but it still sounds like fun.

Either way though, THIS is gonna take work. Keep in mind, a Frankenstein job like this can eat up that 5-7 thousand dollar price difference very easily. Especially if you have to outsource any of it. If you can fab this stuff by yourself it sounds much more feasible.

Plus Frankenstein jobs never go smoothly. I have an old 69' Fairlane project I have been working on for years, using only Ford parts, that still isn't running right. This is mostly due to wiring, a nightmare you will have with this project. It will be killer if I ever finish it though.
