new drum brake

Good evening, today I did a rear brake job, new wheel cylinder, springs, and shoes. My question is what can I do to allow the drum to be more easily removed the next time. There seemed to be a grove in the shoe that would not allow the shoe to come off. I ended up using an air hammer to get it off. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you

One way to make removal easier is to back off on the adjuster before removing the drum. The star wheel can be accessed thru the slot on the backside. A couple of smacks with a mallet after that helps also.

Unfortunately I did that this time. There was a ridge warn into the drum that was a bear to get over the shoes. Thanks for the reply though

You should be able to back that adjustor up enough to get over that rust lip. Also
you might need to get a small screwdriver to push the lock away from that star wheel so you can back it off.
