New gas tank skid plate... can you say aluminum boys and girls?

Got a new Savvy Off Road aluminum gas tank skid plate installed yesterday, here are a few comments and pics...

The total weight savings for my TJ was 39 pounds. The new aluminum skid weighs 32 lbs. my old OE skidplate and Tompken aftermarket skidplate together weighed in at approximately 71 lbs. total.

Additional ground clearance gained under the new Savvy Off Road skidplate is approximately 1.5".

Trackbar clearance, at least an extra inch which is cool because my RE trackbar was rubbing against the old gas tank skidplate.

Here’s the old rusty OE skidplate… no more rust worries there now!



And the old heavy steel Tomken skidplate… that thing was much heavier than I remembered…



Check out the lack of clearance between my Rubicon Express track bar and the old Tomken skid plate on the following two pics. There was evidence of a lot of rubbing between them from the lack of clearance.





Check out the new added clearance between the track bar and the new skid plate. Savvy Off Road gained this by moving the gas tank and skid plate as far to the rear as possible.

The hands of friend & skid plate designer Blaine Johnson tightening the stainless steel straps that secure the plastic gas tank to the new skid plate.




The above is one reason for the big gain in ground clearance that other aftermarket skid plates donít offer. Notice how the gas tank is up against the tub floor with just enough clearance for the hoses and connections. It would be literally impossible to raise the tank any higher so with Savvyís skid plate, youíre gaining the most possible ground clearance which so far as I can tell, is far more than the others give.

There were so many cool little touches I noticed that Savvy included in the designÖ these are a few I can remember but there are more that Blaine mentioned I can't recall right now.

Flanged gripper nuts that help spread the load while helping to keep them tight.

Grade 5 carriage bolts that wonít spin if you should ever need to replace a nut from trail damage means you wonít have to drop the skid plate to tighten or replace them.

Wider mounting surfaces to spread the load and better absorb those impacts from hitting big rocks on the trail.

Mounted as far rearward as possible to provide maximum clearance away from the track bar.

Inside corner strengthening brackets to absorb energy from impacts and provide extra beef where itís needed.

A space/slot for clearance around a tow hitch receiver so you won't have to remove the hitch or bumper to install the skidplate.

All the details can be found on their website at Savvy Off-Road : Gas Tank Skid - FREE SHIPPING till June 1st! like what kind of aluminum (6061 T6) used, etc. which is over my head since Iím not really up on metals like mrblaine and Gerald are from Savvy.

How difficult to install? Iíd say itís a two-banana job with help from a friend being recommended. Thereís no cutting or drilling needed, itís a bolt-on jobÖ you just have to drop the gas tank which is really no big deal. All in all, Iím digging it. The 39 lb. weight savings, no more rust, and the 1.5Ē of added ground clearance are great since Iím always dragging my TJ over the rocks. I think weíre going to be seeing a lot more cool aluminum products from Savvy and Iím looking forward to seeing whatever comes next!

(this last pic shows it with their decal which I haven't installed onto mine yet)

It should do real well. The developer, Blaine Johnson who is a friend of mine, has been using the same aluminum for his flat belly-up skidplate for 6-7 years now in Johnson Valley and it's holding up perfectly. He wheels regularly and exclusively in JV so it's had a good workout.

The company (Savvy Off Road) is brand-new and this is their first product, with their new products initially primarily made from 6061 aluminum which is about as strong as it comes. There will be corner guards, rocker guards, etc. The warranty is pretty simple... if you can break or destroy it, you can either have your $$$ back or they'll replace it no questions asked.

Hmmmm looks sweet and nice way to free up some weight off the springs as well.
I'd be curious to see or know do they plan on doing a T-Case skid plate anytime soon.

I really like the aluminum idea for out here. The salt kills everything and the rear end of the Jeep gets harshed bad all the time.

Your picture shows the tank fitting snug but the head of the bolts that hold the tank straps on look as tho they might rub the tank, it may just be the angle of the picture as I am sure this would not be the case. Is there more room than it looks.

That's a valid concern from what it may look like in the photo but if you saw it up close, you'd realize there's plenty of clearance and it's not an issue. Plus all the bolt heads are rounded and smooth like in the below photo.

Looks like another well thought out product from Blaine. Looks to be either 3/16ths or 1/4" 6061 and that should hold up fine in the rocks. Hell anything will dent if you hit it hard enough, but this one should save you some shock life by being about 40 pounds lighter than the steel versions. I've seen some aluminum ones before. Some good some not so good. This one looks well thought out with the right materials and the support where it needs to be.

Those carridge bolts look like they would be fine. With clearence like you say then this makes me glad I waited. The only other aluminum one I ever saw was the one stu had made by Troy but never realy noticed if it ever hit the market.

Yes, you use the exact same mouting locations as the OE plate does.

I forgot to mention that these are Grade 5 bolts and not the usual carriage bolts like you'd find piled in the Home Depot bins.
