New Problem..overheating

My jeep started overheating the other day I would go about ten mins down the road and my temperature would spike. what could be the cause of this? I have a new radiator and when we changed the thermostat it started leaking more coolant.

Is it leaking coolant out the overflow because it's overheating? Could you have installed the thermostat upside down?

You could of cracked the thermostat housing is it leaking almost right on top of the fan pretty much. They are very easy to crack if you don't have your thermostat in there just right it will slide out and get caught Between the head and housing and cause the housing to crack when tightening down the bolts. Oriellys sells a brand new replacement one for about 15 bucks.

I'm guessing water pump. With the Jeep temperature cool. Open the radiator cap and start the Jeep. Look inside while engine is running. The coolant should be flowing like a river. If it's not really moving, your water pump is bad. Same thing happened to me. I would get about 10 mins down the road and SPIKE!!! (I found out that my coolant "leak" was coming from the radiator cap) Hope this helps!

Best way to figure it out: pressure test the system (test kits available at pretty much every auto parts store). Test will help you figure out where the leak is coming from. Fix the leak and if applicable, replace the component(s) it's leaking from since you're opening it up from there anyway. Finally, flush the cooling system and refill.

IMO that's the best way to go about it as opposed to just randomly throwing parts at the jeep and hoping for the best.

I replaced the thermostat and its helped but after you get the engine warmed up it goes to the red and know its begun to smoke (white smoke) could it be the head gasket?

Yes, I'm afraid it COULD be, but there are other things to look at first. Look to the waterpump, and do a compression test to see if it is indeed the gasket.
