New to Jeeps, Semi New to Standard Shift

Hello All,

First off these forums are fantastic. I have found a ton a great info.

So I just purchased a 2005 Wrangler X. Very happy with it. 5 speed standard.

I haven't driven a standard shift since high school, I"m 40 now, so its been awhile,

So my question is while shifting through the gears it feels pretty normal, but when getting to third, I feel a slight, kick back on the stick. not very pronounced, doesn't make any noise, just this little kick back, I'm wondering if its normal. back in high school I drove a standard Honda civic, but essentially, shifting a sports car, compared to a truck there may just be some things that are normal, but Im just not aware of them, make sense?

Thanks in advance for the Help

Slight kick or tick going into a certain gear when others feel fine is usually indicative of a worn or broken synchro ring on that gear. Annoying yes, just shift slower. Fix, pull trans and rebuild or just get a synchro put in or live with it.

this happens on my 2nd gear. When you say shift slower do you mean

a) hold the clutch longger and physically put it in gear slower than normal

or

b)get the rpms higher than usual and then shift into the problem gear

I've been doing A for a bit but it still does that kick back thing, just not quite as violent. Sometimes if I push on the shifter to the left with some force it alleviates the kickback.

Hey All,

Thanks for the welcome!, and the replies.

So, it's nothing I"m doing wrong. Again haven't driven a standard in a while, now i have tried to push a little harder left while shifting up to third, and that for the most part does alleviate the kick back, I sometimes feel it in forth as well.

So whats the cost to fix an issue like this, cause its bugging the crap outta me!

@Holton345 its def a 5 speed

I just had some suspension work done to it, it was squeaking very loudly, my guy replaced a few bushing and things, cheap fix no more squeak.

But this tyranny kick back thing worries me a little

ok ok,

I feel a little ridiculous , I keep saying 2005 but its a 2003

Sorry about that. I was originally going to buy an 05 but went with the 03 cause it was MUCH cleaner, and had less miles. but I'm stuck on saying 05...SORRY!!

Anyway, so lets get back to costs involved to fix an issue like this? any thoughts

First off- I like that blue- she's pretty!

When you say kickback, do you mean there's a steady force physically trying to pop out of gear?

Or, is there like a tap-tap-tap feeling in the shifter? Tap-tap-tap would likely be the syncro- as mentioned. The tapping comes from the gears trying to mesh. Same thing I have going into 2nd. I use the shift slower 1-2 method when I use 1st. Skipping 1st likely isn't an option for you with a non-Rubi 5 spd.

Unfortunately, I can't help on cost for either problem. I will be following along to see if anyone has cost info. Though, I'll prolly go the DIY route when the time comes (unless it's pretty cheap).

Coool Blue Right!?!?, aint she purdy?!?

Ok so its more of tap, but a single tap, not repeatedly tap-tap-tap.....and no noise associated with it, just feel a slight kickback in the stick, its not hard, its not trying pop out of gear or anything, it happens every time I drive it, but not everytime I shift into that gear. I feel like Im doing some sort of damage.

But it could also be totally normal and im just not aware of the quirks and things of owning a jeep

but good lord is it fun!

Yeah, a five speed is not factory for an '05. Glad you saved us all from an identification headache by correcting the year. A 2003 has the NV3550 if it has the 4.0L block. I agree that it sounds like you have a badly worn synchro - perhaps broken teeth?

How many miles on the Jeep? What you are describing does not sound too bad to me. Sometimes with a "new to us" vehicle we can over analyze every little thing. It sounds to me like you have no problem going into gear or grinding, just a slightly different feel from the other gear shifts. Is it a tap or just clicking into gear. I have had standards before where third felt different than the straight line shifts.
I would put a some miles on and just keep an eye on it. After a while you might just get used to it. On the other hand if it gets any worse then out it comes.

Sometimes a fluid change will help with shifting. It is cheap and easy to do.

Also, you don't know if the previous owner put the wrong fluid in it.

I'm not sure what fluid your trans requires, though.

The wrong fluid can cause shifting issues.
