Hey y'all
I'm fresh, as I finally took the time to go through the pain on the a to sign up. Anyway my current money costing question that I'm researching is about gearing vs. a Tera low. 03 tj sport d/30 d/44 lock rights and 3:73's with 35's. And yes on the road it's not as good as it would be with 4:88's but it's not that bad. My concern is off road and that's what brings me here. I currently am not running an SYE but that will be the next order of business because I'm concerned about breaking a u-joint and being screwed. So my delima is should I re-gear to 4:88's or do the Tera low . It appears that the the Tera low will give the best crawl and low range performance but the re-gear would be the best all around. It's not a DD so the rocks are the emphasis here. That being said I've been hearing bad things from local shops about the durability of the tear low.
All opinions are appreciated. Thank you all

Don't have any experience with the tera low, but my thought would be to regear first. That will put your engine/trans in a more comfortable spot throughout a broader range, and that benefit will show up in 4lo as well.

It's looking like thats the way to go

Thanks for the reply. I guess the Tera low was attractive because although it's more money to initially to purchase. It's something I could do myself at the same time as doing the sye. The re-gear I would have to have it done so with the labor expense it would be a wash. My mechanic would obviously benefit from the re-gear so I can't be sure about his opinion about the Tera .
This Jeep may get me divorced😜

My 98 sport has a terra low from previous owner as well as dual ARB lockers and 456 gears with 33 tires

It is really just for rock climbing and not recommended for use at any significant speed

It is not a strong design as the planet gears have to be a double stacked gear of two different tooth count which greatly weakens the system mine has lasted but never used over 10 mph, many have failed and I look up and post a link

Thanks Digger.
After checking out that link it looks like some of the problems were probably related to over reving but it's definitely not very reliable. I noticed a comment that someone swapped in a t-case from a rubicon. Do you know anything about that ,like benefits and what else you would have to do make the swap work. I know rubi's have 4:10 gears but I don't how the t-case differs. Thanks

It is a robust but very large transfer case and they command a high price

Since you 03 has the shovel skid (at least I think it does) it should fit but manual vs auto matters for input spline and it has a flange slip yolk eliminator built in and uses an elec tone ring no speedo gears

It can be done but cost is high and correct gears are more useful
As they are always there were as as far as gearing the rubicon tc is only different than stock in four low
