I have a 2001 TJ 2.5L 4 cylinder. I'm looking for a nice exhaust sound that sounds deep when idling or something that is averagely loud when revved. Any suggestions? Not looking for a engine swap either.
4 cylinder motors just won't ever sound very deep at anything above 1500 rpm honestly. And the louder they get the more high pitched they get. My personal favorite exhaust for the I-6 is MBRP's exhaust system, they make a muffler for your 4 banger as well. Here's a video of a 4 cyl with the MBRP kit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwBHM8oFsOw
I added the AFE catback (for a 4.0L) to my 2006 2.4L. Fit seems exactly the same and it sounds decent, definitely louder and meaner than stock. Still sounds like a 4 banger though.
X2 on the Thrush muffler recommendation, there's absolutely no need to pay the big $$$ for a cat back system. My previous TJ ended up needing an exhaust modification and the muffler shop installed a Thrush which sounded awesome. Actually the second Thrush they installed sounded awesome. The first Thrush they installed was a little too small and thus a little too loud.
a couple posts up there was an amazon link posted which will have the part number.
fyi i have used them before and they are one hell of a muffler for $30 also sound great. It's interesting to hear that the jeep guys like them so much because the internal spot welds have broken on 2 of mine within 1 month of each other and the mufflers were less than 1 yr old and maybe 50 ... 1/4 mile passes on them so i wouldn't think they would hold up well offroad but maybe i just got a bad batch from summit, or maybe they do better with offroad vibrations than with compression and flow. Also they are made in china i try my very hardest to not purchase made in china anything sometimes you can't get around it though.
I too looked to the forum for advise on exhaust. Choose the Thrush Welded based on advise from other Jeepers & people on the forum. Bought on Amazon for $27, best $ spent on Jeep mods yet! Sounds incredible not too loud when on highway in 6th gear. Cannot go wrong with Thrush Welded!

How hard was it to install? Just ordered mine, hoping I don't have to pull out some lube and a grinder.
