I called the dealership to find out how much an automatic transmission filter & transmission pan gasket would cost.
The man gave me the price for the filter, but told me that they don't sell a transmission pan gasket. He said to go to my local auto parts store & pick up a tube of RTV, instead.
Is this right?
Jeep doesn't make a transmission pan gasket?
And, what the heck is RTV?
O'Reilly Auto Parts sells an automatic transmission pan gasket.
My transmission filter came with the gasket. I used the one provided and everything is great. RTV is used in place of gaskets. sort of a gasket maker of sort.
last time I bought the Wix trans filter it came with a rubber gasket. I used a LubeLocker instead (but saved the other), and so far no leaks with factory torque specs.
The factory installation is RTV. Mopar/Chrysler does not sell a gasket with their filter. Some aftermarket come with a filter and parts stors will sell one with theirs. I've used RTV before but just bought a Lube Locker and a Mopar filter.
If you haven't purchased your filter yet go to the dealership and get the Mopar one. Have heard a lot of issues with 3rd party ones. Also they offer and updated pan design that holds more fluid and has and updated magnet design.
* my personal advice from my own experiences, do what will work best for you *
Usually, the dealership's prices are so much higher than the local auto parts stores' items. But this time, they're pretty reasonable.
O'Reilly wants almost $14 for their filter, whereas the dealership wants just a little over $23 for their filter. A $10 difference for such a crucial part. Plus, not to mention -
* having to go through the mess of having to change out the filter (AGAIN), if the cheaper one is sub par; &
* maybe being stranded, depending on WHERE the cheaper filter decides to crap out on you.
Another thought -
Another member mentioned using an aftermarket plug that you install into the transmission pan. Once the pan has been dropped & cleaned, you drill a 1/2" hole in it. You then insert these 2 halves, one from each side of the pan, then they screw together. You then screw in a 3rd piece that becomes a plug. You re-attach the pan. The next time you need to change the filter & fluid, you have a drain plug to make it a lot less messy.
RTV is gasket in a tube. A silicone substance used to make gaskets. It works great. When it's time to change it's a pita to scrape off hence people loving lube locker reusable gaskets. Plug no idea. Sounds cool. Thought I would clear up RTV. I hate it. Got g2 diff covers now. Drain and change no scraping. A lube locker would work too. Little more work.
Some aftermarket filters can cause problems for the 42RLE, I agree with the above recommendations to go with the Mopar filter. In the grand scheme of things, the extra $$$ for the Mopar filter is a drop in the bucket.
I have a 32rh 3 speed and went with the aftermarket filter and gasket. Wish I could have heard Jerry recommend the OEM filter before I did that. Do I not have as much worry with this transmission?
Ditdo on the B&M trans pan drain plug kit. I have one on all my auto trans. Sure saves a lot of mess when draining the oil. Just don't over tighten the plug or the whole thing will try to spin when you go to loosen it, a little thread sealant helps. Also be carefully with the RVT sealant, a little goes a long way. If you squeeze it inside the pan it can and will get into the valve body, there are alot of small passages that can get stopped up. Clean the pan and apply the sealant to it and let it start to dry( touch and not stick to your finger but still soft) then install the pan.
It looks as though the drain plug, once it is installed, sticks up a little higher than the bottom of the transmission pan. Is there a certain place on the TJ transmission pan that you needed to install the drain plug, so that it wouldn't interfere with anything in the transmission?
