How do you get the instrument cluster off?
http://www.stu-offroad.com/body/gauges/gauges-1.htm

Odhinn helped me replace the right hand side wiring on my instrument cluster when I first bought my jeep. Every time I would take a right turn all my gauges would reset! The guy who sold it to me gave me the stuff the dealership gave him to fix it that the recall said to instal. Mine is a 98 also..

On an xj that got towed in, that was a no start for me the crankshaft position sensor went. This knocked out all of the line voltage to the other sensors resulting in the no bus. On my wrangler the computer took a dump and all of the gauges wouldnt read even the gas gauge Hope this helps.

i think there is a thread on this site that answers that question. I did not search it but i think it had something to do with the cluster plug?!

You're right.

Remove the gauge cluster and plug the connectors back in. For some reason some come loose.

there is a tsb to replace the connector on the instrument cluster towards the passenger side for corrosion and loose terminals. I had to do it on the jeep i just bought. Inexpensive long term fix

For a better fix you should pull the cluster and bend the prongs out a bit so they make a better connection to the harness. I always use dielectric grease to help.

The fun comes from figuring stuff out on your own. Once you start tearing into your junk you rely on yourself to fix stuff instead of an internet forum where you get 7 different wrong answers and 2 correct ones.

At least, that's the fun for me.

Oh, come on! The fun is "fixing" it 9 times and only 2 of them work!!!
