We went mudding today in my 2003 Wrangler Automatic and everything was going well. We went through a lot of decent size puddles/small ponds we went to back up, the thing squated like it went into gear and nothing. The trans was really hot, linkage was working properly, drive worked, but no reverse. What could have caused this? Any ideas?
Well I do know that in automatics in TJs, your year there is an opening vent right above the Bell housing on the transmission, I know I had a friend who got stuck in mud for a few seconds, mud got in and it cost him a couple hundred to fix. His gears didnt work, but he also wasnt able to drive home. Looks like you were able to though, so it could be it.
I am going to flush it on monday. Could there be any other problems that may have caused it? It still drives in drive. I think its weird that its just reverse and nothing else. I appreciate all the help!
You can't wait to flush an automatic that has ingested water. The reason is that there are adhesives holding the clutches inside that will start to disolve if the water is allowed to stay inside too long. And it needs a total flush, not just a drain & fill which does not drain all of the old ATF out.
Make sure you ONLY have it refilled with ATF+3 or, better, ATF+4. Don't let them use any other type of ATF NO MATTER WHAT THEY TRY TO TELL YOU.
