Noise coming from engine compartment

Today while driving down the road I noticed a howling noise coming from the motor. It's sounds like the wind is howling from the drivers side when I pop the hood. It isn't totally constant but it does come and go quite frequently and sometimes when I hit the gas a little harder too. And also it has been idling a little funny lately too so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Oh it's got the straight 6.

Could be a vacuum leak.

Well if it is a vacuum leak it will allow what ever is in the air to enter the engine unfiltered. There are not a whole lot in terms of vacuum lines under the hood. It would be an easy check with the engine running look at the lines around the intake. There is another large one that runs from the PCV on top of the engine to the air box.
