Noise from underneath

Greetings all!

I tried searching for any and all answers that relate to my "issue" on the forum, but I haven't found anything yet.

Here is the issue: Every once and a while, when I first start the jeep, I hear a noise coming from down below that sounds like you put a card in bike spokes or a leaf is stuck up there and it hits some metal when rotating. It doesn't happen all the time and then eventually just goes away.

Any suggestions?

While idling or just when moving?

Then I'm going to guess heat shield as well. Once your Jeep's cool, take a rubber mallet or something and tap behind your catalytic converter. That's probably the culprit, it's located on top of your main skid plate. Chances are the welds around the cat are busted and the shield is ratteling.

or your cat is starting to fall apart on the inside, but in that case you will hear a rattle when you kill the motor too. I would get under your jeep and kick or bang you exhaust (lightly) so see if you can track down your noise.

Thanks for the advice. Getting out there shortly to troubleshoot. I'll let ya know what I find out.

If the cat was falling apart, would the rattle on shut down sound like the one when I start it? Not that I haven't noticed anything as severe as that on shut down.

Ok, Just got underneath it and DID NOT notice anything loose or broken. I tapped all around the cat and heat shield. Now, the skid plate prevented me from accessing it to really get up close but didn't see or hear anything out of the norm. The heat shield was firmly held in place. I did however, notice that my muffler was black, at the bottom, where the pipe goes into it from the cat. Tapped it with the mallet and it was really soft. Could that be the problem? Maybe rust is rattling around in there? Thanks again!

It didn't make that noise yesterday morning, but low and behold, this morning it started. I got underneath and it seemed to be coming from the front end of the jeep. below the radiator or there abouts. More centrally located then to one side or the other.
Thank you for any thoughts, as always!

I've had rocks get stuck on top of my skid plate after wheeling, and they can rattle sporatically. Worth a look?

Have you found out what is wrong yet? I've got a rattle exactly like what you've described (with the exception that the noise doesn't always start as soon as I start the engine--it sometimes waits a bit). I've been searching different posts to find anything I can on rattles, but I haven't found anything that has worked. After reading this thread, I'm wondering if my catalytic converter is messed up again (I'm on my third one). The sound is similar to what I remember when my first cc failed.
