Not your typical code question...

I have a 2010 wrangler with 3,000 miles on it. Saturday, the check engine light came on along with the ESP light and the Electronic Throttle Control light. Owners manual says to shut the vehicle off and restart. I did and the all lights went out except for the check engine light. Went to the dealership today and was told they couldn't read any codes because I had "reset" them by turning the vehicle off, which is what the owners manual says to do! It was all I could to keep the engine running and get powere to the wheels. I was told I would have to drive it until the lights come back on and then limp it to the dealership so they can analyze the codes!
I thought the computer stored every code as it came up. Am I wrong about that? Or am I just getting the run around from the service department?

Go to Autozone, they'll hook up to it for free and see what code its giving. CEL has to be on though for them to check it, if I remember correctly.

If you want to see if any codes are in the sytem, you can do this.

Steps:
Start with key in the off position
Turn the key to the accessories
Turn key to off
Turn key to the accessories
Turn key to off
Turn key to the accessories and look at your odometer.
If there are any codes, they will display there.
They will usually store them for a couple of days without your CEL on.

Again nothing will show up without the cel being lit. I had the same problem. What you are going to have to do is wait for it to come back on (if it does) and drive it directly to the stealership to have them check it. Don't turn it off when you get there though, leave it running or the light may go out when you re-start. My cel was on for 3 days, got in it to take it to the shop and the light went out. I was informed that they cannot diagnos if the light is not on. Maybe the new JKs store the code for a couple of days but I know that my TJ doesn't.

Google "limp mode" that's what it sounds like. There's a boat load of info out there about it, and if I didn't drink, and have kids and a million other things, I could probably remember what causes it, and that it is your Jeeps way of protecting itself. My Charger has the same "feature"...
