Question NV 231 transfer case rear seal replacement

97 Wrangler 4.0L 5spd.

Shop manual shows special tools to pull the slinger and boot to get to the rear seal. Are these tools absolutely necessary? Anyone have experience doing this job.

Would like to try replacing it myself. Thanks!

It's pretty straight forward, the only issue is getting the new seal in there straight, use a good lube so you don't scrape the new seal on the shaft and screw it up before you even get it back together. The only thing I can think of when working on a transfer case tool wise is a good set of snap ring pliers, cheap ones will make it a miserable job.
You don't even have to take the transfer case out actually though it does make it easier than working on your back. Just make sure you get the pump pickup back in right.
