I have the ieGeek® WIFI Wireless OBD2 Auto Scanner Adapter Scan Tool for iPhone iPad iPod which is under $20 on Amazon. I use it with ODB Fusion app for iPhone $10.
which one you get will depend on how you want to use it. If you are using android, Bluetooth works great. If you are using iphone, then you will need a WIFI one.
I have this one from Amazon - has worked great for me. I use it with the Torque app (paid version)
Works great on my wife's Town & Country, could not get it to work on my TJ. Not sure why, but, with others having positive comments about other adaptors, I would avoid this one.
I have one of the WiFi ones for an iPhone (iPhone can't connect via Bluetooth to those for some reason).
Along with a useful app, it does everything you need it to. The benefit would be in getting the right app that has useful features, code lookups, ability to reset. I still use a free one, but it reads codes and resets. I have to disconnect from the OBDii wifi in order to continue my research on the web from my phone, but again, it's basic. I use it about once a month between my 3 vehicles or my friends' cars.
I got an Actron from Sears on sale for $32. Reads and clears codes easy. Every now and then it throws my favorite P2096. O2 sensor. Clear it and your good for another few thousand miles.
I use the "Engine Link" app on the iPhone. It reads and resets codes without issues, but other analysis features you may want from an ODBii reader are lacking.
I just used mine again today on my GMC Acadia, 900 miles from home. Gave me my problem code for the transmission perfectly. btw, here's my specific model. Dirt cheap. I normally don't buy dirt cheap, and not sure what possessed me to do that, but since it wasn't a part that went on the jeep I decided to take a risk. $17. Did I mention cheap? Hope it lasts!! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3K2X4M?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00 I use the "Engine Link" app on the iPhone. I'm using the (Dash Command) app for an iPhone with a twenty dollar reader from amazon. It actually works in all operations, but the instant MPG doesn't. I'm not sure why because the other readings match the analog readout on the vehicle's dash.
Does anyone know of another app for the OBD II unit? This is a nice setup that isn't expensive and gives some valuable data. I'd be happy to have one with just MPG and Fuel level or miles until empty.

Our jeeps don't support the miles till empty function, that's one of the readings I'd like to have too. I'm using Dash Command with the Bluetooth reader and the instant mpg works.
That's the one I have and it works great. Just as good as my friends $1k unit. I use my phone and a Samsung tablet with the accompanying software and Torque. It is more expensive than most but has a different chipset for faster reading and computing
I have both the cheap BT and the cheap Wifi versions of these readers from Amazon. The BT one served me well for almost 2 years until I switched to iPhone and needed the Wifi version. That's been working great resetting my P0455 code every 4 or 5 days in my TJ. I used Torque on android which was excellent. I'm using Dash Command now on iOS which seems pretty good. I still like Torque better but that was mostly because of dash cam racing plugins which I used while racing my MINI. I won't be in that situation with my TJ...
It doesn't work on my 97 TJ, although the seller said it should have the correct protocol.
Any suggestion for a tested scanner that works for the first gen TJ? Mine is a euro-spec model, but it does have the OBD2 plug and from the pin position it should have ISO 9141
Since as far as I know the OBD2 protocol was a 1996 USA mandate and there are even diesel and leaded TJ export PCM it is possible that a euro spec is not OBD2 compliant
Does your 1997 euro spec have an upstream and a downstream oxygen sensor and does it display codes in the odometer window like USA 1997 do
I will have to check about the sensors, I have the Service Manual so I will try to locate them.
I have tried the trick with the odo display and it doesn't work for mine.
