Cool OE Locking Gas Cap woes..!!!

OK--more of a rant and tid bit of information I learned on this little contraption last nite... Was headed to the gas station to fill up --got there tried to get the gas cap off-- it is the factory locking cap-- I put in the key and turned to the right like normal--- then I went to unscrew and it kept clicking like the key was was not engaging-- so I removed the key.. Then I turned the gas cap clockwise to make sure it was on and seated.. Then I tried the key again--No unscrewing just the clicking--- so I said screw it went on my way. So this morning I was out there messing with it --still could not remove it with the key. I then proceeded with my trusty channel lock pliers --squeezing on one of the ears and pulling slightly and the cap came apart -very easily. This is scary--so much for protection from a locking gas cap.. Once a part-- the top come off-- then there where 2 white pieces that engage the locking mechanism of the cap. Then what is left is the tether , the neck white piece and the outer ring. Here all I had to do was turn the piece still left in the filler neck and came right off.. After I got it all out and apart --looked over the parts --could not see anything damaged -so I grabbed some graphite and put just a tiny bit on the internal locking ring and put everything back together and now it works fine. So if you ever have trouble with your gas cap there is an easy way to get into and possibly fix it. Not sure what caused my trouble --but I will have a spare on the shelf and my channel locks wont be far from me.

I have a locking cap on my pickup. In Oregon you aren't allowed to fuel yourself. I was going for my key, but the attendant already had the cap off. Just pushing up from the bottom while turning is all it takes. Try it

I never heard of a factory locking gas cap. Never mind....... I found it in my parts fiche.
Retired my 94 YJ 4cyl 5spd @ 200K
Now in a 04 TJ 4cyl 5spd CV @120K+
Both as a commuter vehicle in NW, NJ
April 2012.downsized and now a 99er.

I borrowed one of the company Jeep's a few weekends ago. I spent probably two hours trying to get the stupid locking gas cap off. I didn't want to use too much force (not my vehicle, hard to explain to the boss, etc.), and I eventually just gave up and left it parked in my driveway.

The guy here at worked yanked it off with pliers. It did not do any damage, and it's been replaced with a normal gas cap. Because those locking ones are a pain in the ass, and gas thieves evidently just drill holes in the tank.

Now I want to borrow the Jeep again.

Mine is broken too. I took it apart and ran two screws through it so I could remove it. The first time it happened, I felt like an idiot. It took ten minutes to remove it. I was out of town on a trip and out of gas.
