Oil Cap Stuck

Last week I did an oil & filter change on my girlfriend's '02 Wrangler. When I went to take the oil fill cap off, it just clicked and spun in my hand but would not loosen at all. I ended up filling the motor oil through the dip stick tube. The last time she got her oil changed, she had her mechanic do it and I don't know if he went a little overboard tightening the cap or if it just wore out from age. In any case, I'm looking for some suggestions to get the thing off. I assume there is some type of rachet in the cap that seems to have broken. I wondering if I can pop the top of the cap off and maybe get a wrench on the bottom section of the cap.

If anyone has a thorough knowlege of the inter-workings of the oil filler cap on any good ideas for removing a broken one, I'm all ears.

I had the same problem with my '01 Cherokee.

You are correct, there is a plastic ratchet between the threaded base of the cap and the grip surface on the top of the cap.

I ended up taking a small pry bar and breaking the top of the cap off of the base. I was then able to unscrew the threaded portion of the cap with a pair of channel locks.

It has been this way for several years now .... not a big deal at all, and with 225,000 miles on it, I am moderating the non essential maintenance.

Thanks.

Right after posting, I realized that I had probably answered my own question and decided to take another look at the cap. Sure enough, the top of the cap popped right off (came off easily by hand) and I can easily unscrew the cap with a pair of plyers.

It sure did freak me out at first though when I had drained all the oil out of the motor without a way to refill it.
