oil filter stuck

I recently changed my oil/filter after about 3k miles, but the filter was on there pretty tight. I ended up having to use channel locks and an assload of torque to get it off. The weird thing is, I only put it on hand-tight when I changed the oil last time. Also, the filter that it had when I bought the Jeep came off with ease. Is this something I should be worried about?

I have the 4.0l engine, by the way.

Did you lubricate the filter gasket before installing?

I tighten my filters by hand and loosen by hand. For other folks cars, this tool will make a stuck filter shiver in its boots:

I put mine on hand tight, when it's time to change I usually need a filter wrench to get it off but it's never so tight I can't get it off with a filter wrench with ease.

I've had to cut filters off with a chisel because some dumb shit at walmart didn't grease the gasket and tightened it down with a wrench. As mentioned above, oil the gasket and hand tight. I've never had trouble getting one off by doing this.

Yea I did oil the gasket. I even tried a filter wrench on it, but the filter was on so tight that the filter wrench couldn't get enough friction and just slipped. I went to channel locks to get more friction.

I use K&N replacements for 2 reasons above and beyond their quality and capability: USA made, removal nut incorporated into the design.

Got a chain wrench and a piece of leather you can wrap the filter with first?

Yea I am not so much worried about getting the filter off; I'll get it off one way or another. I just didn't know how the filter got so tight and was worried that something was wrong.

Per manufacturer directions, I tighten the oil filter as tight as I can by hand, then add a half-turn more with a strap-style filter wrench. And yes, I always lubricate the new filter's o-ring with fresh oil. And for some reason, even when installing the filter like that, I am not always able to easily remove it at the next oil change. It is frustrating at times.

I've had a similar experience many times. I have never had it SO tight that a filter wrench didn't easily get it off though... I chalked it up to the heat cycles that the threads go through when they're connected, whether or not that's legit IDK but it seems reasonable. Incidentally I haven't noticed a difference whether my engine is cold or warm while performing the oil change.

I tighten people's filters in he middle of the night while they're sleeping. It's how I get my kicks.

You need a better filter wrench. I have the one with 3 jaws that crushes into the filter as you loosen it and it works awesome.

Even though I put some oil on the gasket and do them hand tight, sometimes they get real tight. It's nothing to worry about. Sometimes it seems to happen to me on drain plugs as well.

^ I've had to do that w/a screwdriver before on other vehicles.

Did it ever overheat between changes?

That vise grip is awesome, I need one of those! The one time I had to resort to pounding a screwdriver through a filter to get it off made me swear to buy a better oil filter wrench and none of the four I have accumulated over the years are all that perfect or reliable every time. I think that vise grip would make me pretty happy for future oil filter changes, I'll pick one up.

I remember filters that were so stuck that the screwdriver through the side only tore the filter in half. That's when I had to resort to a chisel on the base of the filter. Jerry, I was in the service station business from the time I was 12. I've never put a wrench on a filter to tighten it and I've never had one leak. I take back the part about never using a wrench. Some filters are next to impossible to get a good grip on them, so I had to use a filter wrench, but I never cranked down on it.

I cussed too many times with using the old strap-style and cap style filter wrenches so I got a plier-style like this one:

It was about 8 bucks from Wally World, think it's made by Fram...and fits about any size, no more finding the right size cap style wrench only to find it won't fit because of clearance issues.

edit: I really like that vise grip one...may have to pick one up soon

I tighten the oil filter till I feel it touching the block then go another 3/4 to 1 full turn. I have never had an issue doing this.

Thank you. I have really enjoyed all the "hand tight" replies as being correct so far in this thread. I have the ability to take it to the correct setting which is roughly 3/4's of a turn after oiled gasket contact and spin it tighter another full turn by hand. That is exactly incorrect, but it is "hand tight".

Some of my Dodge pick-up oil filters actually have a series of letters around the top and a simple formula printed which basically says if the gasket touches at letter A, turn it to D which boils down to 3/4's of a turn.

Hand tight swing by sometime and I'll put one on hand tight for you. Don't call me to take it off when it's time.

Most the filters I see ( AC and Fram ) say right on them to tighten 1/2 to 3/4 turn after contact. Some even say to oil the O-ring!

I must be pretty weak, I have been putting my oil filters on hand tight for many many years and never had a problem getting one off.

I get your point. I used to have some people who demanded I tighten lug nuts by hand instead of an impact. I can break the studs off most passenger cars with a 4-way. I don't tighten oil filters that tight. I started in the business at 12, I guess I take for granted knowing how tight "hand tight" is supposed to be.

Alright, you and I both know how tight that is, now how do we share that with others so they don't wind up with stuck filters?

I use an electric 28V Milwaukee impact to put lug nuts on. I'm good enough with it that I can get all five within 1/6th of a turn to be at 100 ft lbs. Doesn't mean I still don't check and torque them afterwards.

Spray a few coats of bed liner on the filter and let it completely dry before you put it on hand tight plus 3/4 turn. Comes off easy as pie.

I like the idea some companies have of putting reference marks on the filter, for how far to tighten after the gasket makes contact. I've never seen it outside of a filter for a big truck, though.

You can find a mark on any oil filter to use as a reference when the gasket touches the block. Most of the time I use a letter in the name on the filter.
