I know this is probably gonna sound like a stupid question, especially as i'm sure i know the answer, but sometimes you gotta check. I am trying to track down a problem with my TJ's electrical system. My jeep is having an intermittent problem where it feels like the timing is off.
That process is perplexing in and of itself, however what I stumbled upon this afternoon has me stumped. While trouble shooting yesterday, my mechanic made the suggestion that perhaps I had gotten the PCM wet playing in the mud. Though I suppose this is a possibility, I haven't cleaned under my hood, and the area around the PCM looked cleanish and dry.
Today the jeep was giving me a fit starting and for S&Gs i unplugged the harnesses at the PCM. When I pulled the innermost connector, I found the inside of the terminal saturated with an oil-like substance. It was on all the pins, and inside the connector. When I pulled the other two connectors the same oil was there, but not nearly to the same extent. My question is, is this substance there for any particular reason? If so what? If not, could this be the root of my timing issue? Please any help ya'll can provide would be greatly appreciated...
Here are pics of the connector, after I wiped it out, and drove about 3 miles home...the oil seems to be seeping outta the PCM itself.
