oil leak

over the last couple of days i have noticed a small amount of oil on my driveway each morning before i leave to go to work. i opened the hood this afternoon and noticed that the whole left side (if you standing in front of the jeep) of the the engine is moist with oil and dirt. there is a thin layer of oil covering the starter (where it appears it has dripped down) and then its dripping onto the exhaust and burning. just wondered if anyone knew what this sounds like or has had the same problem. i am thinking its the main gasket. any thoughts?

check the oil filter to see if its secure, and also check the oil pressure sending unit(right next to the oil filter). Have you noticed and loss in oil pressure?

THat could be as well... Every 4.0 that I have ended up having a leak at the back of the valve cover. Check up there for a source.

if you can find anything.. wipe the area down clean and then see if you can find the main leak then on the clean engine

yeah, it seems to be coming from the valve cover. everything from that point down is covered in oil. i got up under the engine today and the whole belly of the jeep is covered in spray from where its been dripping while driving. hope its just the gasket!!!

if it has any decent ammount of milage on it, im sure it would be the original gasket causing the leak.... which reminds me I need to replace the one on my XJ

been thinking about it and i have been doing quite a bit of wheeling lately and i am hoping that the valve cover has just come loose instead of the gasket being messed up. talked to a buddy who has a sahara and said he had the same problem. will check in the morning so keep your fingers crossed for me, ha...

just give it a good tighten up - if leak insues, replace the gasket, its not that hard.

My '02 has 40K on it and it's now starting to leak oil from the valve cover. Try re-tightening, clean and re-inspect. Change the gasket if it continues to leak....Might be a good time to upgrade to one of those fancy valve covers. Won't make it go any faster but looks real nice.

starting cleaning and observing after i tightened the cover down and noticed a small drop of oil coming from the side of the filter when i held the throttle down. the dumb@ss one of the service stations here in town used a wrench to OVERtighten the filter and it had a small crack in it. i changed the filter and oil and problem solved!!!

I"m glad problem is gone if it leaks around curves or sharp edges on the valve cover gasket put some high temp silicone in the corners (if any on wrangler engines since i've never taken my valve cover off yet)
