Oil Leak on 2000 Jeep Sahara

I recently bought new tires. The employee there informed me that I have an oil leak, but the leak is out of reach and would require them to drop the engine and basically cost a lot in labor. He was estimating about $600, but he wasn't able to approve the labor hours either way. He also estimated the leakage to be roughly a quart a week.

I just wanted to know what progression I should go through to get this leak fixed and if there is actually a leak require the engine to be dropped.

I have a friend who goes to mechanic school who said he could work on it during their open shop if it was a relatively easy fix.

FYI: It's a 2000 Jeep Sahara, manual transmission with just over 100k miles.

Thanks,

Speicher

Must be, I do not know of what else would require removing an engine. Would it be easier to remove the tranny if so?

Exactly

How in the hell can he possibly guesstimate its losing a qt a week unless he had it for a week?I have met some very seriously good mechanics in my years and have yet to meet one who can troubleshoot the amount of oil a vehicle uses, unless he's driving it for you.Cut shy of that "mechanic"he is going to bleed your wallet dry. Also,if it is the rear main,he don't need to remove the engine,I'm thinking thats a two pc seal.
