oil leak!!! pics included...

ok so i had an oil leak a that was going on since i bought the jeep.. well a few days after... i didnt think much of it because all the cars i have owned have had leaks.. so i cleaned the whole engine area and underneath the oil pan and pretty much everywhere around that area.. and today is when i started to see the seepage of where its originating.. only problem is i have no idea what this particular area is called or if its even fixable.. this has been my first vehicle w/o a distributor cap and frankly this whole engine confuses me...

can anyone tell what this is called or if its fixable or not... i really hope it is.. if the pics arent good enough i can always take more... thanks alot for all your help like always..

its not bad, where you're pointing is your head gasket. pretty major repair. i bet your not even using 1/4 qt. between oil changes (every 3k right?)

The 4.0 has a number of "common" leak areas. One being the rear main seal, another is on the back of the valve cover. There are a few other but not as common. As long as it's not leaving a puddle in your parking spots I wouldn't worry too much. Just keep an eye on oil level.

i have no idea yet.. i just bought the jeep about a month ago.. i will definately keep an eye on the oil level though... it leaves about a nickel sized puddle every morning... not a thick puddle but like the kind that is absorbing in the cement already.. is that enough to worry about.. i can take a pic in the morning to show...

also about how much does it cost to have the head gasket replaced???

oh no, i hate those places, i just hate it when people neglect maintenance.

anywho, i looked up the labor on your headgasket. $633 labor, and guestimate on parts probably $150 in gaskets, oil, filter, coolant. and then machine shop charges for resurface probably $100. a slightly more than monkey wrench mechanic could do it themselves, but get the head machined.

but from your pic, doesn't seem like you need to be too worried yet, check the oil level at fill ups, and i bet it won't really be low. less than 1/2 qt. between oil changes is nothing.
