Oil Pan Questions

My main seal needs to be replaced and when I look at it I am not sure if I can drop the oil pan without removing the exhaust.

Has anyone done this?

Also, my oil pan is trashed so I was going to replace that with the studs and nuts. I will eventually get a skid but does anyone make a reinforced oil pan?

Anything else I should look to replace while I have it apart? Oil screen intake thingy or down-tube? not sure on correct name but I hope you know what I am referring to.

Thanks, I use Stu-offroad all the time.

Looked at it more closely and I will have to drop the exhaust.

Yes. I want to say its four bolts. They come out from under the jeep with a long exstension. Once those are loose and you drop the trans mount (the exaust hangs from it) you will have it down far enough to drop the pan.

happened last month ... installed an AEV oil pan skid, form-fitting kind that hugs and protects just the oil pan. Hit some rocks dead-center aft and while sliding off the steel pealed up and a tiny shard *POKED A PINHOLE* in my pan right next to the drain plug. Resulting in a .... drip .... drip .... drip
Dang thing was supposed to protect it, not *penetrate* it.

Dealer part price: $256 on Chyrsler back-order
Dealer labor est: Three hours (removing exhaust/manifold)

From readups there is some tricky sealing needed on the front end with RTV to seal around the skinny end of the pan. Also, I heard aftermarkets are not as well designed as the stocker.

I took a two-part epoxy "gas tank sealer" let the thing dripdry for three days, sprayed brake-klean around the oily bottom of the pan near the drain plug, brass wire-brushed it to rough the surface, then stuffed a bubblegum sized glob into the pinhole and smoothed it against the bottom of the pan.

400 mile trip to the Appalachians last weekend, some moderate-heavy rock wheeling, parked in my driveway two days after getting back, can't tell from the dipstick that I lost any oil.

So, no, I did not have the dealer install the pan, don't even know if it came in yet.

I have to replace my exhaust manifold also so I wll put it on hold till I have time to do both projects. FUN!
