Oil Pressure

I have noticed that most days my oil pressure is about 60 psi @ about 2,200 rpms. However, occasionally, like tonight, it only shows 38-40 at the same speed. It seems reasonable that it may be a sender or gauge problem. Any suggestions on how I can test?

Thanks!

cut open a line and see how far it sprays??
i have no idea to be honest, i would say jsut look at how much it costs to replace the unit, if its less than $50 just buy it and slap it in!

Perhaps change the oil, and go to a good oil, like Gastroil. Just a thought. Stay away from the cheap oils like Penzoil, and Quacker State.

its fairly common for the oil sending unit to go crazy like that, I think they are less than $10 at auto parts stores and take 5min to replace. I have one as a spare for my XJ as it had 2 junk out within a year. I'd say replace it.

If it isn't your sending unit you may have debris in the oil system. Mine hovers around 40psi at 2200 RPM's after warm up. Oil sludge can cause variations in pressure by partially clogging system, a lot like clogged arteries in us. Hook a good oil pressure gauge in place of the sender and watch the pressure from cold start to full operating temp. After warm up get someone to hold the RPM's at 2200 and watch for a bit. If the pressure gauge gives the same results then you may have to do an engine flush. If the pressure is steady then you probably just need a new sender.

i would bet that it is the sending unit. i just had to replace one in my 97 tj this past summer. My gage was giving random readings. the unit was cheap, easy to replace, and it fixed the problem.

My oil pressure go's to 0 and the light comes on when I let off the gas, and go' back up, but below 40 when I speed up again. 99 TJ 4 cyl. 120,000 miles... Should I go after the oil pump this weekend or do some tests first, like are there any east to get to ports to hose in a mechanical gauge?
Please give your .02 Thanks
