Oil pressure dancing

Okay my oil pressure gauge needle is jumping all over the place. When I first start it, it sometimes stays at zero and the idiot light comes on, sometimes get up to normal run pressure. While I'm driving and I stop abruptly or exit the freeway it drops to zero and the idiot light comes on. When it drops and I am driving it I can bring it back up by giving it gas or turning up the fan. I've got plenty of oil and the temp never goes above normal. Anyone else have this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Replace your oil pressure sender which is mounted close to the oil filter. They go bad and cause this exact problem, it happened to me too.

Easy, unscrew the old one and screw in the new one. It has one electrical connection that just plugs into the harness.

Yup, unless you have fat fingers like me. It's still easy just a pain in the ass.

okay does this oil pressure sender actually regulate oil pressure or just send the reading to the dash? Basically, can I still drive it till I get a new one?

Yes, assuming you have no other symptoms of high or extremely low oil pressure all the sending unit does is transmit the data to the gauge. It will not cause catastrophic failure.

I agree on the OPS as a possible failure. I also have seen oil filters by-pass, causing the oil pressure gauge to fluctuate.

What regulates the oil pressure is a relife valve in the oil pump.
