oil pressure dropping

My 97 sport 5 spd is dropping oil pressure to 0 and causing my check gauges light to come on, only at idle not when moving. Oil level checked and appears good. I have been using 5w20 all season but it has been unusually hot this year. I changed the oil last night to 10w30. I noticed that I had oil blown all over the side of the block and a lot on and around oil filter. Oil was also all over the frame too. What could have possibly went wrong?

The oil filter is likely just not sealing, you could have either over-tightened or under-tightened it.

Before worrying too much about your low oil pressure, replace the oil pressure sender mounted next to the oil filter. Use a Mopar sender, the aftermarket oil pressure senders sold by auto parts stores like AutoZone are likely to give problems, I ended up having to go back to AutoZone 3 times one Sunday before I finally got one that worked properly.
When you have a choice, buy American.
