searching only brought up issues with whole clusters or problems as a result of some other work. my issue is a little different. i drove my 99 to work yesterday and noticed that only the speedometer was not working. all other gauge work fine. but then about halfway to work, it just started working again. same thing happened on the way home. no other issues, no drive-ability problems, just the speed not showing. i haven't completed any recent work that would have/could contribute to this issue. anyone have any suggestions on what to check?
either the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) or the gear that turns the VSS is bad. They are located on the tail of the transfer case towards the drivers side. both fairly in expensive to fix and the gear is quick to inspect.
when you are referring to the gear, do you mean the speedo gear (the ones you change when to adjust for speedo for tire size)? if so, i don't have that. the previous owner installed a teraflex super short sye & that uses a sensor & tone ring for vehicle speed display. they should still be good b/c i bought them from teraflex about 1500 miles ago.
With a Teraflex SS SYE, the mechanical gear speedo isn't really an option.
You may want to verify that the plugs are all secure and have good solid connections. Some dielectric grease at the plugs may help ensure a solid/clean connection.
ok. drive into work today and everything was working fine. but then about 10 minutes into the ride, the speedometer goes out for about 2 minutes & then came back on.
You prob found the answer already but here is what I got.. I got the P501 code for my TJ. I too have the SS SYE. I made sure the rear yoke nut was EXTREMELY tight.. Then pulled out the sensor and tried to turn the tone ring.. (Couldn't) after that.. It turns out it was the sensor it self.. Tereflex sent me a new sensor.. BOOM.. FIXED!!
yeah. i haven't been on the site for a while. ended up emailing Teraflex & they thought that it was the sensor. they sent me out a new one under warranty (since it's only been a couple thousand miles since the other one was installed) and it fixed my problem.
I have a similar problem. I have a 98 tj w/ a Teraflex sye kit and a Tom Woods shorty on it. For the last few months the speedo has stopped working from time to time and the "check engine" light comes on. The speedo works within the next 2-5min, but the warning light stays on for sometimes a day or more. It also idles erratically, and occasionally stalls . I originally thought it was the sensor itself, but now I think it may be a broken wire. After talking to one of the techs at Teraflex I'm wondering if it could also be the tone ring. If anyone can give some insight into this problem I would appreciate it.
