overdrive issue???

Hi everyone, I wanted to bounce a question off all of you. I had a 98 sahara that was a stick and ran as smooth as butter, so I tend to compare my 05 automatic to it.
the 05 has an odd issue and i wondered if it is a big deal.
the 05 wrangler X w/ auto and OD, between 40 and 45 mph seems to kind of run where you can not just coast along, you have to give it gas to get past this low spot to have it run smoothly. this jeep was purcased with 31x10.50 wheels and at first I thought it might be the oversized tires, then I went to the dealer who assured me thats where OD kicks in and theres nothing wrong. note: w/ the OD button off theres no issue. but does anyone else experience a low spot at 40-45mph? does everyone crusise around w/ OD off?
im not a big automatic fan, so I have never had one to judge against.

The 4-speed automatic drops the rpms so significantly when the overdrive engages, around 1K rpms, that it's easy to start lugging the engine at lower driving speeds. That's why people turn their OD off so often, the engine rpms are just too low at lower cruising speeds... especially once larger tire sizes are installed. This is why Jeeps with this particular transmission receive recommendations for significantly lower axle ratios (to raise the engine rpms up) than would be appropriate for most other transmissions.

so it sounds like it by design and not an issue... great. now the next question. my OD is automatically on all the time and I have to remember to turn it off. off is when the dash light is on. so can it be made to be off all the time and I can manually turn it the other way for highway driving? does the constant switching on and off cause issues w/ the trans?

There has been no easy way found yet to disable the OD all the time, the OD switch is not simply an on-off switch. Constantly turning the OD off shouldn't harm the transmission at all, this is certainly done all the time by owners of this particular transmission.
