Quit Guessing, Use an Ohm Meter

I "always" check for misfires with an ohm meter, and I "always" find the failure without the extra expense of guessing.

Check each wire and each plug individually. I as often find a bad spark plug as bad wire.

The smell could be a very hot catalytic converter.
