P0456 Code

So this morning as I am pulling out of my driveway my check engine light came on. Stopped at Autozone on the way into work and pulled the code...P0456. I was told it is the gas cap...so I drove to work, took the gas cap off, put it back on, clicked it about 8 times, disconnected the battery, reconnected the battery and no more light.

Should I check anything else?? Is this going to be come a common thing?

Thanks guys and gals...

Usally thats just gas cap did not seal, If it happens again replace cap. and if that does not do it start looking under hood for cracked or slipped off vac lines.

I have been fighting the same code for over a year. First I tried a locking aftermarket gas cap, no luck, then I thought I would use a factory non locking gas cap, no luck. Checked all of the lines, all looked good. Did the drive it for a while then the light would come back on, disco the battery thing for a long time. Just Tuesday I finally brought it to a shop, they said it was the purge solenoid so I ordered one from the dealer and installed it, but too soon to give a report at this time. Scooby

The techs here use a Smoke test to find pesky leaks.......They charge the fuel tank tank with smoke and then look for leaks.

If your gas cap is left loose or if you fill up with the engine running, it'll trip that code. It should be fine now, I wouldn't worry about anything else unless it comes back on when you know the cap is on tight and you didn't fill up with the engine running.

Sometimes a locking gas cap can leak air which will also cause the problem, as will if you install an aftermarket vented gas cap. The sensor your TJ tripped is all about making sure gas fumes don't escape into the atmosphere, nothing more.

Please help...not sure really what to do, and I don't feel like paying a mechanic 80 bucks to diagnose and then 40 to fix the issue if I can do it myself.

Thanks

Take a look at all the hoses and vac lines for the evap. mine has more because it's a California emissions model

Thanks, I will look at that tonight...According to the build sheet for my jeep it also has CA emissions...but I am pretty sure I don't have that black box with the two hoses coming out that is in the picture.

replace your gas cap first with a new unit. Clear the code and try it again. They are less than 15 bucks and it is cheap insurance to cross that off the list.

Even if my jeep is an 03?

I forgot to tell you guys that this all started after I got back from an off-road trip driving thru some pretty big mud holes and rocks.

if that makes a difference?? Also my filler hose fell off when I did my lift and it has never fit all the way back onto the tank, but it is tight...could that be the problem?

Well, finally found what was throwing the code.

If you go from the purge solenoid, follow the hoses that bend at the frame..and that is were the leak was. Both hoses were dry rotted cracked.

So code is gone...for now.

Your '06 has it located up inside the passenger-side rear corner of the tub, behind the tail light. You get to it through the little flap door on the bottom.

Just thought I would share what I have found on my 03 sport so far that caused the code: Replaced gas cap, no workie, found cracked rubber hose that comes up on the driver's side firewall, worked for a while, just recently found the rubber boot on the PCV valve had deteriorated and cracked badly. Code free once again! Will post after the next episode.

Agree, with all the above, this code comes up about every 6 months for me. I am staring to become an expert on this code. The biggest issue i have is the line that runs alone the frame rail, it either keeps on cracking or i get small punctures in the line when off roading.

Wonder if I can replace with Stainless steel lines so i don't ever have to see that little amber light again.
