P0500 speed sensor

So my speedometer has been giving me problems for a month or more, it would work fine and then quit working, then start working. I've been procrastinating on it in case it wasn't the speed sensor, maybe something else like wiring. When I bought the jeep the PO had installed an inline speed compensation box instead of replacing the plastic gear for true speed. Anyhow, it finally went out and the engine light came on, pulled the code and got P0500, speed sensor or not getting a signal. My plan is to go through and check a few things prior to speed sensor replacement, maybe spend an hour or so just making sure all is well. I did the gauge test (hold down the trip button while turning the key) and the speedometer worked.
Changing the speed sensor, what is involved in that? I know where it is, just didn't know if I had to disassemble anything once it's removed or loose any fluid in the process. Anything I need to know when buying a new one? Installing? Type?
I'm going to remove the connector first and clean it up, read somewhere that they can have bad connections.

SYE vs super short SYE vs stock

All rubicon transfer cases and all super short SYE have only a tone ring and sensor no gear

The non rubi stock case or that case with a SYE that is not super short has a gear

The speed sensor for all has a plus 5 volt wire a ground and a signal wire

Most aftermarket electronic boxes to correct speedo reading just tie into the plus 5 and ground but receive the signal wire process/modify the pulses and send their own output to the PCM

As far as removing the sensor very simple just watch any video youtube on speedo gear change as removing the gear involves removing the sensor

Finally as different gears are different diameters the speedo gear is mounted off center so that pivoting its mount moves it toward or away from the gear it engages and rotating it toward gear may be all you need to do
To many people ignore that and just plug it in and don't rotate to full tooth to toothenenguagement
