I know nothing about hardtops. I would guess the glue can come off with goof-off or similar product. I would make sure all glue is off, lightly sand surfaces (150 grit) and prime then paint. I assume hard tops are some plastic or fiberglass material.
They are fiberglass, they have little bumps that add texture, and I was wondering if I should sand because I think sanding may take those off for the most part
Not fiberglass. Heat gun the carpet off, use some 3M adhesive remover to get the glue residue off. The factory paint should be fine. If not use some scotch brite to scuff then blow off, clean with prep sol then paint white
I don't have any suggestions on removing the carpet and glue, but I painted the inside of hard top satin black about 4 years ago and all did was wash it and dry it, then sprayed it...I've not had any problems with it coming off and it sets outside under the deck from March till November.
I painted the inside of my hard top black. I used Rustoleum Universal satin black. Came out great. No peeling or chipping. I cleaned the inside good, then wiped it down with 3M wax and residue remover. I then sprayed it with Adhesion Promoter then a few light coats of the satin black. Changes the whole look inside the cab. I have pics in my build thread.
what's the thought behind painting it black? I feel as though it would make the cab feel smaller than it already is. Are you happy with the black or would you have gone with a lighter color if you had to do it again?
