Passenger Seat Latch won't work

Somehow in the last couple weeks my passenger seat latch won't work. I'm talking about the latch on the side to move the back up and the seat forward to allow someone in the back.

It's tough to pull up, but it never "snaps" and lets the seat go forward.

The regular back adjustment and seat adjustment work fine (to adjust the angle of the back and how close to the dash).

Any help??

Cable broke under the seat more than likely. You can buy the cable at the dealer. In the meantime under the seat there is a black thing towards the front on the floor that if you push down on lets the seat tumble forward.

Mine broke too and I just do as DevilDog mentioned and reach under the seat and hit the lever so it moves as it should. Takes a little getting used to finding the proper lever but my son does it with ease so no biggy. It is not worth the hassle of replacing the cable in my opinion.

So base on the vid in that other thread the seat should should slide all the way forward then tip when the black hoo-ya under the seat is pushed down. Hmmm mine only tips I have to slide it all the way forward first with the regular slider bar then hit the thing underneath to get it to tip. Gonna have to pull that apart to see why that is.

Same thing, your cable is likely broken... It happens.

I had the same problem a couple o times.
1st time: handle on side of the seat moved freely..doing nothing - broken cable

2nd time: Handle was stiff...took the seat out and put it on a table to look at it...and a socket fell out of it. was jammed in the mechanism somewhre....its worked just fine since.

May not be your problem....but easy check and maybe a free fix

I know my cable is broken I stated that in my first response. What I am trying to ascertain is if the cable moves the black thing, which it does when it works than the whole slide and tip thing should happen when I press that black thing by hand right? Cause it doesn't it just tips but won't slide forward.Sorry I didn't mention that in my first post.

If it's not the cable, then check the latch mechanism under the seat. I've had to grease mine a couple times with the white lithium grease since sometimes it get stuck.

Doc, The cable only allows the seat to travel forward. The small black push lever, next to the adjustment lever, under the seat is what allows the seat to tip forward. When you slide the seat all the forward, there is a small tab attached to the seat frame that when it gets to the all the way forward position, it will push the back of that "black thing" up, hence allowing the seat to tip forward, but the cable alone has nothing to do with the seat tipping forward. In short, no, the cable does not move the black thing. Mine wouldn't tip either and I thought my cable was broken but it turned out it I wasn't forcing it forward hard enough (due to slight rust). Try holding the slider lever thingy under the front and slide it all the way forward pretty fast. Note: Will not work with you in the seat.

Good freaking deal, I knew about the cable and jsut assumed mine was broken. I never knew about the lever though, I just applied a serious dose of "man hands" to it, it popped and now it works like new again, I just need to get under it with some grease now. Thanks Devil Dog Doc and everyone else who posted!!!!

Yeah I pulled the seat out last nite and saw the issue. It is an ingenious setup when it works! I just got some new seats out of a 99 and wouldn't you know cable on that one is busted too grrrr. So what I did last nite was attach a strap to the thing that the cable attaches to under the seat with a clip on the end and it lays on the floor in front of the seat. Pull up on the strap with a little ummph and the seat pops forward and up as it should. Little ghetto but free!!

Slight thread drift...but related to the seat lever.

I need to replace my missing plastic/rubber knob/handle that goes on the end of the lever that is located the rear bottom of the front passenger seat that makes the seat 'fold and tumble' frontwards. The metal lever itself is there. It's the knob I need. For '01 Sahara.

Can't locate it online. May no longer be available, in which case I'll fashion/attach a kludge knob.

I've only found two levers. They are on the track that lets the seat slide forward and backward. I can't find any lever that adjusts the back.

Thanks for the posts so far. I'll get it figured out!
