[Pictures] Car Accident; Help Determine the Damage?

Hello, I was pointed towards this forum as a centre of wrangler knowledge by my mate. I have owned my Wrangler for officially a year this November and I was in love with it when I was a child and I still am.

I got into an accident yesterday night on the freeway when there was a big object of car debris from a semi-truck on the road in my lane. In my head for a 1/10 of a second I said "I should call in about this for them to move it off the road". I see it in my lane going 60, did my procedure of looking before changing lanes, it was clear, slowed down to 50 gradually moved to the right easily. I felt like I was clear but I was not and I then turned the wheel a bit more and loss control, spinning, no rolling, into the guard rail on the right shoulder hitting it with the left side of my car. I got it towed home. I'm not sure if I did the right thing.. I was thinking of every possibility in one second.. if I drove straight into it I expected front damage and undercarriage damage, maybe a broken windscreen, tyre damage.. and then there's changing lanes. Being there were no cars around me, them being 60-80 yards away, I decided to change lanes because it would be optimal. It would be nice for a fresh set of new eyes looking at this situations seeing if my actions, thought, and reasoning were "right".

I'm not exceptionally familiar, engineering and tech wise, with my 2001 Wrangler and I would like to ask you guys for assistance in pointing things out. Is my darling still fixable with some work? Not worth it? Will it be written off? Etc.? I can't get under the car today to take pictures, I'm really sore.. but to my knowledge and examining, no damage, no leaks.

Thank you very much.
Cheers.

Thank you, I'm okay, only banged up and a bit sore. 'Tis but a scratch.

It's a bummer to hear that it's totaled! I reckoned that it's body damage (bent), radiator damage (bent), tyres shifted (would this be declared blown out?), and wheel damage (bent) just from a standpoint observation. I had the notion of working on it, hammering those dents out from the body, get a new radiator, wheel, and tyres. Having being X4'd on it being declared totaled so far, sure says it's not worth fixing!

Keep in mind the TJ is 12 years old and it will not take much to total it when any insurance company see's the damage.

I am a Trooper for NC, and I would be telling you its totaled if I investigated that collision. The front end alone holds a TAD of 3. 7 being the most severe. Moving on to the rear qtr that would be another 2 maybe even a 3.

Thank you Atthehop and NC Bear, I appreciate the input with different views of looking at the damage and collision of my Wrangler that I did not think of and from a trooper who have seen many collisions. Next step: My Wrangler is considered totaled, it isn't worth self-repairing? If not, what do I do with her?

Cheers.

Your insurance co will usually pick it up and give you a check. Have you called them? Was a police report done?

Take the Check, buy back the totaled rig for pennies, and make it a Juggy

Man, I don't want to come off sounding like a jerk, but to be perfectly honest, an internet forum shouldn't be your first stop in a situation like this. You need to get in contact with your insurance company and you need to get yourself in to a doctor to get checked out. You don't want to have some health issue pop up later down the road (no pun intended) that was hidden by what you thought was just "being sore." A Jeep is not the vehicle you want to drive if you end up with undiagnosed musculoskeletal problems.

I hope you're able to replace your Jeep and join us permanently!

That's all that matters, really.
Put the insurance check towards a new TJ.

It's not. It looks bend at least above the front axle. Probably at the rear too. That's why it's definitely totaled

You're not being rude, any input is helpful in any degree to take into consideration. I have gone to my doctor today, gotten an x-ray and everything is tip top, just literally "banged up", bruised behind my shoulder and a bruise mark on my forehead. I appreciate the caring!

I just called my insurance, I only have liability and they can not do anything so no check for me.. regretting that I should have gone with full coverage now. I had 3 mates of mine come over, two engineers and 1 body & paint, noted that the only damage is the radiator, body, wheels, and tyres; body & paint asking for $5000, told him that I might as well salvage it and asked to help me out, ended up asking $4000 ~ estimated time of repair 2 months. I said that I'll think it over instead of making decisions on the ball. I'm not considering paying $4000 but at the same time I'm not sure how to get my moneys worth. Repair or Salvage? May I have input about this from you fellas?

Again, thank you all for replying to this thread. Cheers!

Good man! A few months ago, a teenager wrote about his accident. His parents told him not to bother getting checked out by a doctor. His parents! I was stunned.

Glad to hear you're okay. Think you might grab another TJ? Where are you located?

NOBODY HAS ADDRESSED YOUR very first Question yet, so let me answer you by saying,
What you did was right at the time, SO DON'T try and second guess it. All the "WHAT IF's" aren't going to change a thing. What has happened has happened. Why do you think they are called Accidents?
IT's just a thing Mate, JUST A THING !!

BTW, since it was a one vehicle accident and you do not appear to have a third party to go after do you have collision coverage?

If there is no frame damage, you can repair, but it may be cheaper to part-out the damaged TJ and buy another one.

I would purchase a "new" to you Jeep and take off of there whatever you think you could use...maybe a seat or something like that honestly from what I am seeing and the fact that you are checking with a Body shop to do the repairs IMO a buy back for you is not a good idea....OBTW maybe take the half doors and top if not to tore up and save them for off road? Assuming you are getting another TJ?

Glad ur ok bummer about the jeep!! My wife totaled mine a few months back n only had liability but thank god she is ok and it was 100% other persons fault so I got 7600$ from insurance for 97 sport n I was able to pick up a 99 sahara. Up until 3 weeks ago I only had liability again til a rock went thru my windshield. Finally called ins to c how much more for full coverage n turned out to b a whole 19$ more a month so now have full coverage n don't need to worry
