Pinion depth starting point

I just started the regearing process on my dana 30. I want to try and get a good starting point on my shim stack thickness but I am not sure what I am reading on the old and new pinions as far as adjustments.

On the new pinion the only numbers are '64' which is indicating that it matches the '64' ring. There is no adjustment or deviation from the 2.250 standard. Should I just assume that it is 2.250?

On the old pinion I just can't figure out what they were trying to write. It looks like an '80' but I suspect it should be '+0'. The bottom number '900' is the matching ring number.

Here is a picture. The left is the old. The new one on the right has a hard to see '64' at the top and no other numbers. Any thoughts?

I ran into the same problem when I regeared mine. I called up ECGS and they said to just start at 70 thou. Amazingly enough I think I ended up at 71 thou.... Anyway, .070 is a great starting point.

Thanks for sharing what you heard from ECGS. The original pinion didn't have any shims besides the oil slinger and the oil baffle. Together they are .074" so I will likely start with .074 unless I can find the OEM gear variance.

I found 2.261 and .006 on the side of the NEW ring gear. I am guessing that the 2.261 is for the pinion so I am looking at a +.011 for the NEW pinion.

Now I need to find out what the original pinion was. Anybody know where they hid this info on the OEM dana 30 gears?
